I have been looking to trade up my Ford 8N for something w/live power, power steering, and a loader (also need more HP's for brush hoggin' some hilly terrain) I found a 606 Diesel(solid tractor-newer rear tires-sound mechanics- but a little rough looking) with a internat'l loader that the seller is willing to trade for the 8N and $3,300. Can anyone give me some feedback? The 8N is my first tractor, so I am just learning. Any help/advice from you pro's would be greatly appreciated.

jon, Jay had great points to check. I am not familiar w/the tractor you are looking at, but I was a Ford owner myself. Model 2N w/front Dearborn blade. The tractors are cute, but you will really be making a BIG step up. Live power/pto; steering; and the hp. Those little Fords were very light and this upgrade will be a good move. I will add, check wheels if there is fluid in them. Also, ask about any manual(s) for tractor/loader. I"m in SW Wisc. where are you at? Enjoy, and share a picture.

The 606 is a bit of an oddball as far as IH tractors go. Certain parts, like sheetmetal, could be hard to find. The engine/drivetrain are pretty much identical to the 460 Utility. About the only major problem they were known for are TA failures (mostly due to misuse/lack of maintenece). The glowplugs will need to be heated for at least 20 seconds before starting even on a 90 degree day, that is the nature of the beast. Make sure all six are working. These engines got a bad reputation for being hard starting because nobody had the patience to sit there holding the glowplug button. All in all I'd say it sounds like you're getting a good buy, as long as the 606 has a Fast-Hitch or a 3-point. Mabey try to get him to come down a couple hundred on his price, I'm not up on 8N values, but I'd say a 606 like you describe is worth about $5000 max.

Not sure why you would say a 606 is an oddbal. While I have only seen one, it appeared to me to be a 504 utility with six cylinders. I don't have a 606 parts book, but I think all the sheet metal will interchange. There is alot of space between the water pump and radiator on a Farmall 504 and the 606 fills that space. Parts should not be a problem as similar tractors before and after the 606 used the same componets.

cant tell u if its a deal or not, but ome things to check on the tractor..

make sure there's no whining when using the hydraulics under load (something heavy in the bucket). Check the dipstick, make sure the fluid isnt milky, that indicates water in the oil. Also check the hydraulic fluid for a milky appearance. Check the antifreeze, ammeter to make sure its charging. Check the loader over for bent arms, cracks, excessively leaking cylinders... Check radiator for green spots indicating leaks. Check oil pressure. You know all them good things..
