Farmall H Won't Start

Good Afternoon, I have a 1943 Farmall H that is use for mowing and pushing snow on my 7 acres in South Dakota. Recently, we received about 8 inches of snow and my old H would not start. It did not surprise me because the battery was getting weak. I put in a new battery and it started right up, I moved the snow and parked it. Then we received another 6 inches of snow and the old H was dead. Nothing. It would not even turn over. I checked my connections and they appear to be OK. I don't know whether to think it is the starter, the pull on/off switch or the push button starter switch. The old H has been converted to a 12 system. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Where should I start? Thank you very much.

I had this happen to my H twice last summer, both times with battery fully charged.

Try this quick check before you get to testing things: Shut off ignition, unlock brakes, put tractor in 5th gear. Get off and push backwards on rear tire real hard, maybe even rocking it. You should hear a "click" sound meaning starter gear had gotten jammed with the ring gear and you have just released it.

Or take off the 2 bolts holding starter on tractor. Chances are you will hear that click sound as you loosen the bolts.

Common problem with H's, I'm afraid, but worth owning one of these jewels. If this doesn't take care of the problem, then other advice posted here is the way to go.

Did you check to see if starter is locked on ring gear. Loosen bolts and shake starter around and it should break loose if it is locked up. If I had a $10 bill for every time I have done this I could go to Florida for a week, very common problem with all letter series tractors

Mark. I have trouble gettin starteed myself on cold winter mornings, my batteries need recharged but my old cells have become sulfated lol. A trip to the Florida Flywheelers next month may help !!!!! !!!!! !!!

A big 10 - 4 with Jim n Hal, charge the battery or try a substitute or jump start her first n see if its simply a battery problem versus any starter or switch or a bad ground or connection, then if she starts you can diagnose the other problems. If a different known good substitute battery or a recharge dont crank her (assuming the battery is okay, have it load tested), I would first remove n clean n wire brush then reattach each n every battery n starter n switch n cable n ground connection n see what happens. If still no cranking you would need to troubleshoot to isolate if its a starter or starter switch problem. If she cranks right up but after she sets a good while the battery gets drained it could be a faulty internal regulator diode inside the alternator (NOT the one in the external excitation circuit if such were used) or a minor wiring short or something else depending on what charging system was used. Jim gave ya a procedure to look for a discharge circuit. In the meantime you could use her then remove the battery cable so she dont discharge while setting until we find the problem.

If you have another 12 volt battery that is fully charged I would install it on the H to see that's the problem. You can use Jim's procedure to check for battery drainage. If the other battery starts the tractor you may have a defective diode in the circuit that's causing the battery drain. Hal

Start by charging the battery (a discharged battery will freeze) disconnect one battery cable to eliminate the possible discharge happening to it. When the battery is charged, With it turned off, use a test light (not a volt meter) and see if the light lights when you touch the removed battery cable and the terminal it attaches to. If it does, it is draining the battery. Bad diodes or a resistance short to ground. Something changed to cause this. See the alternator diagnosis procedures from John T and diagrams from BobM. Battery drain in the search for slot above will also help a bunch. JimN
