Kim, any chance of making a page longer? It seems that once an item moves off of page 1, people stop contributing.

F-Dean: Most of the folks that wont bother going past page one or two aren't worth hearing from anyhow. They have little to offer in the line of advice. Also a good many of them are just too lazy to read, even if the subject is something they have questions about.

All one has to do at any given time, is look at the number of threads on the go about Farmall H or about TA. I use those as example as they are most common.

That is one of the shortcomings of this type of forum. New forum softwares "bump" the posts with the most recent contributions back to the top of this list, like the RedPower forum does, but for some reason many people object to such a change here, even though this interface is clunky and inconvenient. Kim has, or had, the new software all ready to go, but so many people threatened to leave over it, that we're stuck with this crappy green John Deere forum softare.

I like this forum because it keeps the bs down. I've seen the other type that puts the active threads on top and many times they just turn into a bs session or someone gets overheated and the anger keeps getting fed.

On here if the post is important or interesting enough someone will repost and continue it.

Hi Nat , I was just over to Nebraska cowmans board . I don't visit there often because it's hard to get on , to many steps , WAY to much security , miserable to try and post on , I just don't see why it's so good ? One good thing about it is it's got spell check ! Maybe if I visited there more often maybe but it seems like there's only four or five regulars on there , all of whom I liked reading posts from when they were over here . But that type of sterile environment isn't fun like this one is even if it's old and outdated ( WOW , sounds like the kids at work talking about me ! ) . I think it works . It might be a touch slower for you folks with high speed connections but my land line dial-up doesn't make that type any better in that respect . ...Randy

Automatically bumping a post with a recent contribution back to the top might be a good thing for that particular posting, but at the same it drives the most recent NEW posting to the bottom, where it quickly goes to page 2, and then on to page 3, and then nobody sees it, and no one has replied to it. I really don't think that is very fair either, and is one of the reasons I do not visit the red power forums very often.

A reply to the post in question on RPM puts that post at the top of the page, the original top post becomes the second post. There is no good way in either system to get the good questions that few people know the answer to remain on page 1. But, there is a better chance to get more response to a complicated question on RPM than there is on YT because it only takes one response to move it to the top. The only problem with forums such as RPM is that when there is a question that everybody and their dog "thinks" they know the answer to, along with some of the off-topic gripes, that post remains on top for days, when it was actually a very simple question to begin with, that immediately got many correct answers. I have read both forums for years, more so this one. Not because I like the format better (I don't), but because this forum covers the letter--early hundred series tractors much better than RPM. A year or so ago, Kim had some compromise in mind -- looks like it isn't going to happen anytime soon. In my opinion, this forum is "clutzy", and outdated. But, I am not going anywhere because I still like the material. One way to get more answers is to ask the question again and provide a link to the original thread so that the people who have not seen it and may have an answer can read it. I have done that with rather limited success, better than nothing. It is also a way to continue a good discussion that has moved to page 2, because some answers generate more questions, which add to the discussion.

Yes, that is true that new posts may be driven down the page, BUT with the newer software you can click on "get new posts" and you will get a list of all the new posts since you last visited.

This is the only forum that I visit that has stuck with the old software... and I don't mind it, but the new stuff has benefits.

I always make a point to check page 2 and even 3 if I haven't visited in a day or two. I keep going until I see a post that I've already read...

Keeping the postings in order from newest at the top, to the oldest on page whatever, also makes it a lot easier to find a posting that you replied to yesterday, or the day before that, or even last week. It's amazing the number of postings that do recieve replies even after it has gone to page 3 or 4.

You bring up a good point, but the newer software has that taken care of as well. You can click on "subscribe" and you will get an email notification whenever anyone replies to the thread, not just the first reply.

Also in your control panel with the new software you can list all the threads that you have subscribed to and get to them quickly.

In my opinion, the newer forum software is user-friendly and only takes a couple of days to get used to. Given the volume of people visiting and posting to these forums, there will come a day when this old software can't keep up.

You can choose to be notified by e-mail with this software also. I choose not to be notified because my e-mail gets cluttered up quite well as it is.

I had gotten used to this format and did not want to change, probably should have. The main thing I like about this style is if you get a bunch of people who use it like a coffee shop and have fifty posts about how pretty that new lipstick makes thier sheep look and NOTHING about a Farmall, then at least it moves to page two and you don't have to endure it for long. And in my honest opinion, the coffee shop got much smaller last fall.
