Hi, never had the Farmall version but had the utility version of 674 and 684 which is same tractor but with different wheels and injection pump turned up to 62 HP. My brother still has 684 and it has almost 7000 Hrs on it. Have done one clutch job and the T/A was eliminated last winter. The T/A problems was caused by misuse, pulling into Lo going down a hill. It also has parking brake problems .. again a hired hand driving tractor with parking brake on.
The German D239 engine is good for well over 10,000 hrs if proper maintenance has been performed.
Very reliable tractor. Pulled 3x16 plow, forage harvester both corn and hay, baler, 10 ft disk all no problems.

Check parking brake function. Problem is parking brake is a band brake around a drum in the rear end and if someone drives it with the brake on all the bits of chewed up brake band can end up in the hydraulic system clogging the hydraulic filter.

My thoughts

Dad bought a new 574 diesel with a 2250 mount o matic loader in 1979. We used it on a 360 acre farm until 2 years ago. Used a 986 for the heavy tillage but the 574 did everything else. Tractor was about bullet-proof. We traded it at 5600 hours, the only thing we had to do to it was a new clutch and routine maintance. Good tractor. Somedays I wish we still had it.

Good tractor. Very manuverable, good power and realitively easy on fuel. Bought one new and ran it 5000+ hours with no problems. It did all the tillage and harvesting on a 170 acre dairy farm. Pulled 3-16's, 10 foot disc, forage harvester and square baler. Ground 2 loads of feed per week with a Gehl mix-all year round. Available with a flanged rear axle or a row crop adjustable axle. As I recall, it was a little loud, and the remote hydraulic levers were too low to reach easily. Wish we still had it. Used ones are going for around $7,000 here (swMO), same as a new one back in the day.
