I have a "48 Farmall M that has long been converted to 12v. The issue Im having is this: every now and then the starter seems to bind up on the flywheel so that the starter wont turn over. loosening the two bolts that hold the starter to the block and giving the starter a quick tap, then re-tightening, seems to so the trick.... until the next time it binds.

Any ideas on this?
Thanks!

Had the same problem on a Minnie Mo Z. Four cylinder gas engines come to rest in two places so the starter drive gear engages the flywheel in those same places most of the time. It wears the teeth and eventually the bevel on the teeth gets worn flat-then the starter drive gear will hit the flat end of the ring gear tooth and jam. Turn the engine backwards and it will release the bengix tension. Pull the starter and use a dremel with a carbide (or better) bit and grind new bevels on the bad teeth. Look at nearby teeth for a pattern and make sure to grind down the worn area of the teeth to be flush with the valley between them. Put a new drive pinion gear on the bendix and it should last quite a while. The 6 volt starter jumps very fast with 12 volts on it and this accellerates the wear.

Just my 2 cents yes you have something worn starter drive or bearings maybe both. But I have one on 12V that when you push the starter button and it don't start then you push the button too fast before the starter quits turning again it will lock up every time, but wait until the stops before pushing the button again and it won't lock up

Growing up years ago we always carried a 3/4 wrench in the tool box of the M and H,If it jammed where you could put it in 5th and rock it most times it would come loose, It seemed to bother most when the battery needed replaced or the cables were corroded.I remember we always put our best battery in the M before we put the corn picker on.

Yep. Your starter drive is getting worn out - or, your flywheel ring gear is nearly shot. Get a new starter drive installed and check your ring gear while you have the starter off. mike
