Just got off the phone to Old. He and his family are hanging in there, waiting on the power company to restore electricity. He said they cannot tell him exactly when that will be. They just have to wait.

I asked him what he needed...how might his friends from YT help him out. The only thing he mentioned was a wiring diagram for his Kohler generator (he didn't know the model).

Apparently he got the 110V side of the generator to operate, but cannot get the 220V side to work. If he could get that, he could get his well running, and maybe not have to carry water to the stock in 5-gallon buckets. The 110V is powering a hot plate (warm food finally) and the refrigerator. He's keeping the back half of the house warm with a propane heater.

He said the generator is an old model and is powered by a flathead 4-cylinder engine. Said it looks like a Ford tractor engine sitting there.

Old also said he is getting a bad case of computer withdrawal, not being able to get on YT. He also said it was nice to know his friends were thinking about him. I told him I'd pass that along.

I know Keith is sitting out in Oregon, wishing he were closer to lend a helping hand. I feel the same way, and I told Old that (I'm in WI). It's not THAT far, but a good day away. Rich seems to be in good spirits, and he seems pretty calm about the whole situation. I have a feeling that's his style.

So, if anyone knows or has the generator information Old needs, let us know here and we'll figure out how to get it to him. He'll need a little roofing help (mobile home) and maybe some plumbing help too, but not yet. Hey Jimmy King, what do you know about roofs and plumbing?

That's all I know. Thanks, Keith, for helping me get in touch with Rich. David

I plumbed my whole house in 2 days. Both supply and waste using P.V.C. pipe. No torch, threading, heavy lifting or hard work! I bought a special nipper for the pipe and had at it. Put in the waste lines and got one bathroom and the kitchen hooked up on day 1. Day 2 finished up the water heater and the other bathroom. Wonderful stuff to work with except for the cleaner. It stinks and can take your breath away. Glue it all up and wait 1/2 hour and test.

Sorry to hear about Old and all the others. Ice really is bad and there's nothing you can do. I enjoy reading his posts.

When I didnt see anything from old I figured the ice must have got him. We were lucky I guess, we have lots of sleet. It is slick but no lines down. That happened about thiry miles east of me and south, then on northeast to Joplin Mo and on and on. Been fun feeding the cows, the 400 just sails along in fifth, since the pastures are smooth. But it will sure slide sideways if I turn it a little quick. A couple of days ago I read with interest a line about a ice storm or snow in 49. Ours started on New years day. But we had no problem with lines down we didn't have that kind of power. We had a 32 volt power plant that kept the batteries up and the lights on

Hey David, Seriously, if you talk to him and there is anything I can get for him, I could use a road trip. I am 1 hour north of him. Highway 5 to Camdenton is clear. The gravel roads are treacherous but with some caution can be traveled. Please let me know if there is something I could get for him. Always looking for an adventure. Have jumped out of a perfectly good airplane before.

Gene:

Take it from a fellow jumper: There's no such thing as a perfectly good airplane.

Thanks, guys, for all the replies. GeneP, I'll call you later today. Maybe we can get you directly in touch with Old. About the plumbing...Rich said the piping was plastic but not PVC. My mom has lived in several mobile homes, and I can tell you that some of the construction has been, uhhh, interesting. The less repair you have to do in one of those, the better. Let's hope in Old's case that the pipes are OK. He WILL have to fix the hole in the roof caused by the falling limb, however. He said he's leaving that in place until the weather clears. I would think he's packed something around it to keep the weather out.

My wife Susie says that, according to the latest weather report, more snow is headed for Old's area. Just what he needs.

The pipes might not be as bad as you think. I bought my house (a mobile home w/ a basement, and stick built addition) from a bank after a repo. They took it in October, and pulled the elec meter, and shut off the gas, didn't bother the water. It sat like that until May when we closed on it. It froze in all the lines, but to this point, the major leaks were in a couple of places where there was copper running outside the walls. Also my old college house (a mobile home just off campus) had problems w/ freezing. That old black stuff will take quite a bit if that's what you're talking about. We had a stray cat that was living under the trailer, great for keeping mice at bay, but it had a tendency to enter/exit right where the heat tape plugs in. One -10 night, the little bugger unplugged it i guess. next day no water...next day, no cat...

Yeppers on worrying about ol Old, wishing we were closer. But one has to do what they can from afar.
I had to go help two ladies that I have known most of their lives, Ford pickup broke down and hydraulics on their tractor needed some work so they could feed cows. Took most of the afternoon, got the tractor going. Truck needs timing gears and chain, job for another day.:>(

Sounds like I am about the closest to him. I am 1 hour north. I have terrible ice on the ground but the warmer temps today melted it off the trees and lines. It got up to about 34 today and the sun was out so that helped. We kept our electricity thank goodness. Walking is the big problem. I drilled 14 deck screws into the cleats of some old hunting boots then clipped the heads off leaving about 3/8 inch stick out, they work great!

I dont know what i could do for him. I have a little generator but it is only a 4000 watt Coleman and I dont think the 220 on that would be enough umph to help him with a pump.

I am pretty new to the site so I dont really know him although I have seen a few of his posts.

If that mobile home is made like the one I owned when in the Army it had 3/8 copper tubing instead of 1/2" copper pipe. Either one would be easy to replace. I rented my mobile home for 12 years and I had to replace the copper tubing since small pin holes ate thru and started leaking. I just double flared the ends and replaced all of it. Copper pipe is a little harder to work with since you need to sweat solder the joints. They shouldn't be that hard to get to in a mobile home.

I had a leak in my home this past June. I found water dripping in the basement and I just thought it was in between the walls. There were no shutoff valves that feed the second floor. The first thing I did was to install shutoff valves. I had to shutoff the main valve to the house. After I had installed the valves I turned on the hot water and I didn't have any leaks. It started to drip when I turned on the cold, but it took a awhile. I called 3 plumbers in the area
and the first two never called back when I had to leave a message. The third plumber I called I spoke to the girl in the office. She said the plumber would have to come out and talk to me. I said I don't need to talk to anyone I need a plumber that has seen this problem before. They never called back either.

I was talking to my wife about this leak and I said I'm going to try and find that leak by dropping a light into the wall. There's a closet
behind the full bath upstairs and I cut out a section of the drywall in the closet. I found no leaks behind that sink in the bath. I drilled 3 big holes thru top plate and dropped my small light into one of the holes and there where I found the leaking pipe. It was hard to get to and I cut out the leaky section and made the repair. I borrowed my buddy's torch since I needed a long hose and I dragged the garden hose to the second floor just in case, but I didn't need it. No leaks in the last 6 months. The copper pipe had a pin hole in an elbow. Hal

Best of luck to old, I'm sure he's crafty enough to take on OLD man winter, and keep on tickin. But el toro, those pinholes you mentioned are heralding big problems for you. I live in a 30 year old house that HAD copper. About two years ago the leaks were getting so pervasive that I replumbed the entire house with PEX, and PEX fitting to get away from soldering. Best of luck to all. Watch the pipes toro.

lets hope its not the newer mobile home plumbing, stupid vinyl tubing with crimped ends (compression fittings would have been a little better).. I about died when I seen that at a friends home when I replaced their water heater. I dont know you guys very well, but I'd be right in there to help if I lived closer. Especially with being laid off, I'm looking for things to do =)

Jay,A few years back when I was able to work
I looked at two projects where the owners were tearing down the old house and put up,a new. One couple worked in a manufactured housng plant. I said why dont you have a custom modular built and move it in. Oh No!! they replied we build them but we would never live in one. Some company loyalty.
