Does anyone know who might be able to re-cover the original seats? AND what was the original seat cover color/pattern for the A,B and IA series? I have seen red, red/white, silver and black for sale and am at a loss to know which goes with what.

I have seen archive photos of Farmall Cs with black seats. That would mean they used the black till at least 1948. The black probably faded to a lighter, maybe tan color. They switched to silver because it reflected the heat rather than absorbing it. Darryl Darst could tell you for sure when they changed from black to silver.

Thanks everyone!! I will contact Mr. Durst to see about restoreing the existing seat for the FAA, then get a drawstring vinyl cover cushion. I have a copy of the B/W photo of the 1939 B prototype off of the Wisconsin site that shows the seat very dark compared to the tractor so the post about the very early ones being black seems to be right. The silver seems right because it would be a trim match to the galvanized rims. Thanks again.

Hey John thanks for the plug! As John stated, we can do those seats in vinyl in ANY color combo that you would like (up to three different colors on one cushion!). I realize that Farmall used alot of canvas covers, but if you would like vinyl, we can do them for you. Vinyl is much easier to clean than canvas if you are using these tractors everyday especially in the fields. In a nutshell, we use marine grade vinyl that is oil and mildew resistant and marine thread which is much stronger than automotive grade like the rest out there. We also use a very heavy fabric bottom that will last longer than the others. The foam is shredded rather than a single 1" piece that will give you a much nicer ride.

You can get them recovered, but you can buy a whole new covered seat pan for the same or less money -- depends on how original you want to be. Red and white was never sold by IH. The early ones were black canvas, all I have seen were silver canvas, I do not know the serial break, if there was one. I prefer silver vinyl, it is easier to clean; canvas, unless it has been vastly improved does not last and is hard to clean, if you care about that.

Roger: I was on the farm from 1952 until about 1961, and I never saw any seat except a silver canvas covered one. (I was on and around cubs, Super A's, super C's and M's.) Hope this helps you. mike

Roger, I was around all kinds on new Farmalls in the late 1940's and 1950's and I don't remember anything except the silver colored canvas seats on any of them. As noted in another post, Darrell Darst redoes them with the original canvas material. He is located in Madison, Missouri, phone (660) 291-8742, and his email is tracto@missvalley.com. He is a national IHC officer and advertises in the Red Power and Harvester Highlights magazines. He has covered three of them for my Farmalls and he does a first quality job. I myself wouldn't consider buying a reproduction as they all come in some sort of vinyl coverings which is certainly not original. Hope this helps, Hal.

Darrell Darst has a reputation of doing an excellent job on restoring seats. Go to archives and do a keyword searc for "Darrell Darst" and you will get a lot of information.
