Thanks to janicholson, Bob, et al. The old girl is charging like a mad dog now. Had to plow out the drive again yesterday morning at 5:30 AM after it drifted shut. 100 yards two feet deep. Darn near buried the New Beetle when I raced around the corner.

Fired her up, revved it up, the little "exciter light" went out and the ammeter jumped up to almost max for awhile. It's nice to have 12v lights for those early morning chores! I think the 6v lights actually made it darker.

You were the guy with the LED indicator light, right?

How did you fix it... different lamp, or resistor across the LED... inquiring minds want to know!

That is me in reply to Bob, 01-18-2007 07:12:54
I had to actually buy a socket for an incandescent lamp. The LED is safely stored on the bench in the shop. Virtually all the rest of the conversion was stuff that had accumulated in the shop, alternator for a Chevy 1/2 ton I had 10 years ago, a DPDT switch that was in the basement, etc.

So, in old tractor accounting terms the conversion only cost $4, I used a spare marker lamp for one of the trailers in the socket I bought.

I think the dim and bright settings on the light switch were a lame attempt at a bit of twisted humor on the part of IHC engineers. "Very Dim" and "Impossibly Dim" would be more appropriate switch position names for the original lights!

On a dark road at night, those six volt lights will serve to allow others on the road to see you, (maybe).

I remember the 6 volt lights on my dad's 1939 Ford. You almost had to strike a match to see if they lit. The seal beams sure changed that. Hal
