Dear Board,
A friend of mine has two beautifully restored F-20 tractors. They have new tires, new pistons, transmission overhauls, new radiator cores, and beautiful paint jobs. The only problem is they don't idle smoothly. At a show last summer an old man unloaded a rusty, scabby pitiful lookng old regular. I figured it wouldn't even run and felt sorry for the old fellow. Much to my surprise and the chagrin of my friend the tractor idled as smoothly as a bathtub. I have played with F-20 carburetors and magnetos but have never been able to acheve that beautiful, smooth idle. I am not old enough to know how these tractors ided when they were new. F-20 experts and owners please enlighten me.

I put Autolite 3077 spark plugs in two of my F-20's. It made a big difference. They are VERY hot plugs, probably not good for hard work.
Regards, Roland

Retarding the timing helps but yeah it"s kinda the nature of the beast. Very few run smooth when not pulling a load.

sure an F20 will idle smoothly. At the end of the day it takes a hot spark not just a spark to make em idle nice
