I am trying to bring this back to life as it hasn't run in 8 yrs or so. The block has been "soldered" along the side for 10" or so, I assume to fix a crack..AND, there is motor oil in the bottom of the radiator and neck leading to the block. the head is off, and I don't see any evidence of blow by...Could the solder and oil in the water be related? If so, do I need a block?

thanks for any help..

If it is an early Super A or just an A the water system is non pressurized. Could be as simple as the seals at the bottom of the sleeves. Slap some new seals in and give her a try, the only thing your out is time and very little $$$.

..... and by the way, if it a 1946, it is an A, not a Super A. If it is a Super A, it is a very late 1947 or newer. Nearly all Super A's had a hydralic lift system, unless the hydraulic system could be deleted when the tractor was ordered new - virtually unheard of. First Super A was serial number 250001. mike

If ceack that is soldered is the area behind the carburator, that is one of the most common places for freeze damage to appear on these engines. It is in a water passage, so I wouldn't expect it to be a cause of oil and water mixing.

If that were my block, I'd clean it up and inspect it very carfully. If that is the only place it is damaged, I'd use it. There is no pressure on the cooling system, I've seen them "fixed" using epoxy, RTV silicone etc. as long as it doesn't leak, it should be OK. Check carefully on the deck of the block between cylinders, they crack there too, and that is a lot harder to fix.

The oil in the water could be as simple as a bad head gasket.

Good Luck!

A lot of those engines cracked behind the carb area of the block. It sounds like yours with a 10" crack is pretty bad. I would tend to lean towards trying to find a new block if it was me. There are plenty of these blocks out there for a fairly resonable price!
