I need a new head for an early M, does one for a 450 work better and direct replacement? Valves & everything the same? or should I just get a replacement M head? Also the cams for the 450 I thought were better, but all the online parts places show them the same as the M? Whats up?

Either head will work on your M but as far as a aftermarket replacement cam what they are callen that fits M -450 are IMPO JUNK as they are the OLD M grind and will run and M fine but put one in a S/M -450 and it will run but will loose power from what ya had as i have alreay been there and done that . As my owen S/MTA ate the keyway out of the end of the cam and not having a bunch of time to send it out and have the cam welded up and done wright like i SHOPULD HAVE i just ordered in one of them replacement cams and lost luggen power and top end Hp. , Runs like a M now .

Vet, we can get NEW cams, which they spec it out for M-450 tractors. Took the new cam to have it read, and it was to the 450 specs, I had my doubts whether it was a M grind, but it was 450 for sure. Even has left handed threads on the cam nut! Chad

They may be now but back 7-8 years ago when i needed one the one i got sure as hello not i dropped 9 hp just in that change out and ya would have to put the indecator and degree wheel to one to prove it to me as i had already done that and that is why i am sayenit and yes it came with the left hand thread stright off the boat from China . as i took the old cam and chucked it up in the lathe and put the indacator on the lobs and a degree wheel on her then put the indacator on the push rod and there was 50-65 differance in the lift . and that was off my old cam and it had wear And at the moment i can not give the degree differance but i was shocked , and there was some phone calls made to my supplyer over this then we had words over someother parts from across the pond that by his book were SUPPOSE TO FIT and after i had sold several items and people started bring the junk back wanting there money back because this stuff LOOKED THE SAME but when ya went to install it it did not fit like the replacement radiators fot the M- S/M they did not fit as i ordered in one for my S/MTA and with the rad hanging over the wright frame rail as far as it would go and no insulators under it the steering shaft was still rubbing the tube another pice of China junk that was a waist of 200 bucks that did not fit and MY supplier would not do anything about SOOOOO O after that littel deal he was no longer one of my suppliers BUT THEY KEEP ON SELLING THIS IMPORTED JUNK . The best deal i have found is to take the old cam up to one of the machine shops that i use and they will fix rebuild regrind to SPEC's any cam that i take them for a 100 bucks and the ones that i have had rebuilt have been good SOFAR.

To the best of my understanding the best grind for Power and torque is the 450 cam. The suppliers may have discontinued all other cams from inventory due to their less capable performance. The head is a bolt on process, and should be good. Using a 450 manifold/carb is also important, as is the use of the front cover and gears, but not necessary. Popup pistons can raise compression to levels that are much better for todays octane. Compression pressure in the area of 140psi or more is great. JimN

Hey thanks, should I assume the valves & springs, are interchangeable as well?
