The steering joint is worn to the point that it will not get tight even with a new key. I have put a lot of pressure on it. Do any of you know a solution short of welding it or replacing one or both pieces. I thought about making a shim or wedge or some type, but the idea has not come to me.
Thanks

Gary, I think I know what you mean. Maybe peening the shaft with a center punch will tighten it up enough. Just make a line of punch marks at equal distances around shaft, the displaced metal will take up the space. Might have to drive it back on., It has worked for me. Good Luck PUTTER

I just put one together that had the same problem. The shem idea is what I did, cut an old hacksaw blade the length of the clamp, bent it in a vise so that it was curved, and put one on each side of the slot after spreading it with a hammer and screwdriver. Tightened it up very well.

I if is the "U" joint, replacement is probably needed. If another component (in the gear box, or bolster bearings, many parts are still available except the gears themselves. Some of the big gears can be turned over to utilize the other unused part. (they will be obviously larger than the smaller gears that cannot be flipped). Ujoints should not be welded (it makes them way more difficult to repair. Drilling a hole in a joint and shaft, reaming the hole for a hardened taper pin of about 3/16" diameter might fix the problem and allow repair. JimN

It sounds like you need some new parts, or at least good used parts...

I'm all in favor of saving a buck, but when it comes to steering or brakes, I kind of like them to do what I had in mind. You could get hurt or killed if things go wrong.
