I have a 1980 IH 384 that will run great if I bleed the injectors first thing. I can let is sit for a short time (2-3 hours) and it will still start OK but if I let it set overinght there will be air in the lines the next morinig. The injector pump was just rebuilt trying to fix the problem. All the lines look good and there are no leaks that would indicate a place for air to get in. Any ideas?

Hi Ken, it have a check valve on the return line, (a special banjo bolt on top of the filter base).Or a leak in the primer pump. Bernard le mécano Québec Canada

Ken: You've got a leak somewhere. I'd follow through on what jb2 has said, but don't overlook those lines and filters. I remember having a diesel doing the same. Several of us agreed the lines looked good, however when I changed the lines it cured the problem. I had another diesel with a crack in filter base, that one was not easy to find. In both these cases one could see the cracks with a naked eye. It took a magnifing glass to find them.

Hi Ken, Interesting problem. Since it has to sit shut off for several hours the Diesel fuel must be slowly leaking down somewhere. Is there Diesel fuel leaking into the crankcase? When you bleed the injection pump do you bleed the top bleed screw or only bottom bleed screw?
We had B414, 434 and 384 on our farm from 1962 thru to about 1992. Only problems we had was lift pump diaphram had pin hole letting Diesel fuel leak into crankcase and screen at inlet to injection pump got clogged once.

No diesel in the crankcase although I thought of the lift pump and may swap it out just in case.
I have been bleeding at the injectors at the tube connection at the injector end. I haven't had to bleed the injector pump yet, just the final bleed at the injector.
In the morning it tries to start so I am assuming that from the pump to the injectors is not the part that is leaking. maybe something in the filter system? There are four lines in and out of the filter system so maybe one of them has a weak seal? I'll keep plugging at it.

Probably in left field here, but I had a SMDTA that acted that way. Discovered that the primary & secondary fuel filters had gotten reversed. Don"t know why this let air in, but???
