I am looking to purchase either a 1957 240 or a 1959 340.I like the look of both of them. The 340 is wide. The 240 is narrow front. Was wondering which one would hold it's value better. Both are showroom condition.A little pricey but very nice.Just buying as to have as a nice toy to have around the house. The 340 is about $1000 more. What do you guys prefer...Thanks for the feedback.I was looking at John Deere TOO MUCH for the money.I like the red/white....looks SHARPE

The 340. Check out the four for sale on this site. Left column. Marketplace, photo ads, tractors, search 340.

riggsjr: For the difference in money I'd take the 340, provided the TA and IPTO are in good working order. Like one of the others said, that wide front can go for a $1,000.

Once you get the 340 home, grab a manual and make sure those TA and IPTO adjustments are correct, not just close, but CORRECT. Then learn all the dos and don'ts with TA. For yard work the 340 will last you and your son two lifetimes without any major repair.

I would say to go with the 340 also. Mainly due to the fact that that is what i have grown up driving and still use all the time. Even today i had our 340 out snowblowing the driveway. Like he others said it is a little bigger and better in almost all ways.

If it were me it would be the 340 hands down, more power, live PTO, T/A. If you are going to use around the house the wide front would be better, more stable. A good factory wide front for a 240 or 340 is big bucks, have seen them priced at about what your price difference is. Parts are going to be more plentiful for the 340 as well. Why not buy both??

riggsjr, hope you get this post. I have had both, well, actually one Farmall 340 row crop and two 240 utilities-one w/power steering. You have heard to comments "bout TA and pto. Depending on age - yours, not Farmall"s - the 240 would be lower/easier to get seated on. A 240 utility would be an easier tractor, but not an option for you now. At the left of this web page, [maybe you have already done so, or have this info] look under the "Research & Info" listing and click on the "Production Nbrs" and/or "Serial Numbers" links to get info on these tractors. Sounds like these two are quite complete so you won"t have to hunt for parts. Remember to ask, unless you have, for any manual(s); top link(s); fast-hitch spacer bars; etc. that current owner may have laying around. I am sure you will enjoy either one. Hey, why not stimulate the economy and buy both! Don"t forget to share pictures of your tractor"S" with this forum as red iron folk like to see them! I am going to "pose" my recently acquired Farmall 340 and post a picture here but first, I have been waiting for snow - we finally got about five inches - as this will set the tractor off well. I also want good "sweet light" to flatter my subject. You see, I have an interest in photography, thanks to my dad and also the great photography project in 4-H.

The 240 wouldn"t be a "57. They went into production in "58. As far as which one is more collectable, it"s probably the 240, since they made fewer of them. The 340 is more of a useful tractor, as it has live pto and a little more power.

Aside from engine differences, 340 had optional TA and live PTO, which the 240 didnīt. We had a Famall 340 and a 240U. Both are real handy. Too bad you canīt buy both!

I currently own both 240 and 340 Farmall and would have to give a big edge to the 340 also. Has a pretty stout 135 motor with all the goodies like TA, lndpto, power steering ,and fast hitch and will be a great around the yard tractor. They will turn on a dime and are a great cultivating and garden tractor. The 240 will also do most of the same things but not all the features. A thousand difference seems a little much to me but there are not many of these showing up for sale around here. Parts can be had for both but are on the upper curve of things. Hope this helps and give me a shout if you have other questions or concerns. Migraine
