if u can think about the sound and it sounds like the rumble of gears then I have had two that the gears in the front are running dry because of the oil hole are clogged up

Sounds as though you might be descibing a bad bearing somewhere, you just gotta find out hwere it might be. As for worth, IMHO, not more that $500.00 tops, they are only worth 1000.00-1500.00 in good, clean running condition

Hydraulic pump? Power Steering Pump? Bearing in water pump? Panty hose snagged on fan? Hard to tell from the description..... .....

Welp, then we can't say, either. Nobody knows what a "whirling noise" is, because that's not a word normally used to describe mechanical noises.

If you can't go and listen to it yourself, then either offer the guy $500, or pass on it. A complete M with major engine problems is worth $500, and then you can either restore it or part it out.

A whirling sound? Could you decribe it more specifically?...and what part of the engine is the sound coming from? Does it change in pitch when the clutch is engaged?

I thought they all made whirling sounds. It's when it stops making sound at all that a problem has developed.
