Paint Question on F-12

Was looking info up to assist on two F-12 projects. Been looking through the archives to see when exactly the paint went from gray to red. All I can find is around Nov. 1936, when the 1937 models came out was when the change was made. Assume this means, according to the serial number listing here that anything before 81837 should be gray. Is this correct, or is this not an exact science? Thanks in advance..

My 1935 F-12 was red from the factory. We checked under everything possible while taking it apart and nothing but red was found. If you read Guy Fay's books, he consistently states that IH would paint your tractor any color you wanted.

Yes, you are approximately correct. Check out Guy Fay's response to my post in the archives. 81837 should be the first red F-12 but IHC did not waste material and may have used their remaining gray paint on a few tractors after 81837.

See the link, someone else will probably have the serial break. Whether the 1937 models started at the beginning of the IH fiscal year is subject to debate. I believe Guy Fay's data book (perhaps he will see this and answer) lists serials by calendar year, if that is true, then the listing you are referring to is strictly tractors built in 1937, and the Nov 1- Dec 31 models were actually 1936 models, but were red -- PROVIDED that the painters followed the directive in the attachment -- that didn't always happen.

Here is my response to a similar question on Red Power Magazine, and Guy Fay's response to that.

Thanks for all your help. Believe the serial numbers on these two F-12s would make them gray to be 'correct'. My bet is a lot of them are restored RED anyway, it certainly is better to look at in my opinion.
