Here in SW Ontario, we've having freezing rain off and on since yesterday. Being on the computer I was not giving this a lot of attention. My good better half does not like winter driving at best, thus I assured her last evening I'd go to store with her before going elsewhere. Now, she tells me it's ice all the way from Windsor to Ottawa, and no sane person from this house is going anywhere. Didn't say I couldn't go, just my designated status would change.

Yesterday afternoon I was e mailing with Farmallhal down in Missouri, they were having freezing rain. How about you Hal is it still freezing rain down there or are you out hauling hay to your livestock? Now, if there is freezing rain all the way from Ottawa to Missouri, that is affecting 1/4 of the entire North American population. Must be two weather systems, what are the rest of you folks having? If that much of the USA and Canada were really under freezing rain, authorities would be calling it an International disaster.

Hugh, we have some fairly decent weather here. We live about 5 miles south of the Tennessee line and the weather is just now turning cold, but not much rain and so far no sleet. I lived in the midwest to Calif for many years and sure appreciate the half-way decent weather here. Sometimes tornado's bug you but we had them in Kansas too. Our winters seldom get down to the single digits and occassionaly some ice but melts off fast. I wish all of you in the bad weather areas the very best and I will pray for relief for youall. Heah! Hi Hugh, thanks for the great topic. Some things on YT must still be afowl as this topic just came up on the board for me about 15 minutes ago. Here in SW Wisc. 11:00 p.m. Central Time, temps range from -3 to 14 with wind chills -9 to -1. Forecast calls for wind chills in the -5 to -15 range through at least Wednesday evening. Began snowing late Sunday afternoon and as of this evening we have about five inches of beautiful white covering the brown. Took dad out of the home for breakfast as I told him it will be just to cold/windy for most of the week to go out. He was smiling at how beautiful it was. Good to see that. Shoveled the drive this a.m. about 5:00 by the light of the Christmas tree and small yard light. Beautiful. the ice on things can be beautiful also, with night lights on it, but, so many folks have way too much ice that is damaging to decades old trees; cattle and other creatures finding rough for living and power outages. I think of the lineman (dad worked for phone company 30+ years, many of them before lines were buried) who go out to turn the power back on. Firefighters who now have to fight icy roads as they respond and downed lines - sometimes live wires. I was volunteer for 15 years and ice really added to the task of fire calls. Hope you are still considered among the "sane". By the way, have you ever had "shebang" weather?? Me neither, wonder what kind of watches/warnings are issued for that. Again, great topic. I find it interesting to hear from so many parts of the world on weather. And your line....Internation...that was funny. Stay upright you folks!

Here in Afton, MN we finally had the first snowstorm of the season with 5" of beautiful soft snow. Had to get the tractor and snowblower out for the first time in nine months, we are finally starting a real MN winter.

Hi Hugh I hope you get by as well as we have. The storm started with rain then frezing rain and quickly changed to almost all sleet, so not much ice on the trees and powerlines just about 3"of what has now become solid ice on the ground and it's froze solid now (9 degrees for the low tonight). At least the roads are all in pretty good shape and the power never went off. I think we were just in the right place, the worst of it went around us. It's pretty rough on cattle right now, Sat night a guy I'm helping had about 30 head stampede from the crunching under their feet and run through a fence this was at 2:30 am so it's been a rough weekend. No freezing rain in the lower Ottawa Valley. We had more than enough in 1998 to last a lifetime... However, we received what is really the first snowfall to speak of, about eight inches. Enough to screw the traffic, but not enough to go sledding. Hope the power outages will not be too long. How about investing in Winpower Manufacturing stock? Around here those units do a really outstanding job re standby electricity...QR

Here in NE kansas we had almost no freezing rain just enough to put a light film of ice on the car windows, some sleet and 1 1/2 to 2" of snow. It was sunny today but no snow melted, tempature only made it to about 10 and is at 4 degrees now 6:45 pm cst.

I'm at work where the power is. We have been without since 4PM on Friday. No water no power. Been flushing stools with rain water caught in 6 gal buckets. My folks are in Springfield and they have about an 1 1/2 of ice and just 10 miles north at my place it more like 3 inchs of ice. Lot of barbed wire fences are pulled down by the ice. I have lot's of pictures I'll share later. I have a small two acre wood lot and there is not a tree still standing in it. Alot of them are hedge and they broke off about half way up or pulled up by the roots. A real mess. But we are all healthy and well fed. Staying at my 80 year mothers house and keeping the generator full of gas.

Paul, Nice to see you on the forum. I believe from reports I heard Springfield was among the worst. Thought about you, Harley and Jimmy and good to know you are surviving this also. I don't think we were hammered as bad as you but trees around the buildings and in the yard are just a mess. Some up-rooted, tops broken out, or just well pruned. Have a lot of clean-up work once it warms up a little. Keep checking fences where cattle are as they are getting smashed as well. Was without power for 18 hours but got it back yesterday in the afternoon. Take care and nice to see your post. Hal

My neighbor has about 40 head and he had all his round bales along the fence line between us that was lined with big old oak and walnut trees and they are all down on his hay and incased in this super hard ice. Each blade of grass is about an inch thick with ice. Don't know how the critters are copeing with all of it. Never seen anything like it in my 44 years. It looks like a tornado that took all the trees and power lines and left the houses.

Hugh, guess what - down went the power yesterday and we were dead to the world. Finally just got it back up this afternoon. Trees are on power lines everywhere and have to keep cutting them off fences as well. Yard is a mess with natures pruning job. Won"t have to look far for firewood to cut for dad"s furnace. Cows are sure giving my tractor a lot of attention. See me coming and they really like that hay we made last spring. Freezing rain has given way to cold temperatures and snow or sleeting now as it can"t decide what it wants to do. Going to be down in single digits this evening. House is slowing getting back up to normal and starting to feel warmer as house was down to 48 F. when power was restored after being down 18 hours. Take care and stay warm. Hal

Hal: I know we have better information today, but just look at all these names in this thread and where they come from. All the way from the IL-WI border almost directly to OK then TX, then across the south to NC, all the way up the seaboard to NS and back across southern Canada, back into MI. Of the 20 people that posted, only Gordo SD and City Boy Mike down in FL were the only two who could say definitely NO FREEZING RAIN. I just wonder if there was ever a time in history, that much of North America was under a blanket of freezing rain.

You must have lost your power shortly after you sent that last e mail yesterday. I could see why the cows would be happy to see you coming with tractor and hay. Kind of hard to pick grass through an inch of ice. The interesting thing also if you use the same vehicle always for feeding, cows and hogs both get to know the sound of it. A dozen other tractors or trucks could drive by and they'll never lift their heads, but when that old feed wagon or truck come they are off to greet it before your in sight, especially if your just a wee bit late.

So far we haven't lost power here yet. There is an awful load of ice on transmission lines. We had some fog this afternoon but that didn't remove the ice. Next 24 hours will tell the tale here. Those weather folks are telling it's going to turn colder, but they've been telling us that every night for over a week.

Now that your getting house warmed back up, stay close to that fireside.

Supposed to turn to or be a chance of freezing rain later tonight though. I'm making the most of a good opportunity and I'm giving my Super C a bit of a work out and so far it's doing really well. Here in Oklahoma it was 71 last thursday evening when I took my walk. I took the same walk on Friday afternoon and it was 21. That was after a good sleet storm, mixed with rain. Round 2 came on Saturday with more sleet. Then Round 3 came yesterday with sleet mixed with rain - thinder and lightning and the whole shebang. We have about 4" of rock hard sleet, 25 degrees and it's not supposed to get above freezing until Wednesday.

Friday it was about 70 degrees here, 50 miles East of Dallas, but all the weather men talked about was the cold headed our way out of Canada. I got the tractor out and drove it around the block becaue I knew it would be the last time for a while that it would be nice enough to get out.

Rained all day Saturday and most of Sunday then it turned to freezing rain Sunday night. Its pretty this morning all white with ice but makes driveing kind of bad.

I hate this time of year. All the money is gone and no customers. Guess Ill be calling the banker again to get more money.

It's currently 33 deg and raining hard. But it's forecast to change back to freezing rain this afternoon, and then switch to snow sometime overnight.

By the way the steel probably only went about 300#. It was actually quite good going around here mid day. We are now currently getting another layer of ice. The one that's bothering me is the build up on power transmission lines. They didn't salt or sand those.

Hi Hugh, I remember back in the late 60's and early 70's we had a lot of ice storms. They didn't close the schools back then like they do now. The buses were equipped with chains, but we were about one mile from the school, so the buses never picked up the school kids in here.

I put studded snow tires on a big Mercury that I had then and my wife would take our daughter to school. My wife said it was amazing the way she could get around on the ice.
She said she passed cars that were just spinning
and she just pulled around them and the drivers were just staring in disbelief. They outlawed those studded tires here in MD. The mail trucks
still use them. Those states MO and KS were hit hard with ice storms. Power lines down and people driving without chains or the cables for radial tires sliding all over the place. Hal
