Howdy, boys: Are rear fenders a very important safety feature on a tractor the size of an H? (I have only owned Super A's in recent years - until now.) When I was a kid on the farm none of our M's or C's had rear fenders. I never gave it a thought at that time. It seems they might offer protection if the operator lost his/her balance while the tractor was moving.... mike

City Boy,We had a grain farmer around here that used a F20 with round spokes when he was just a kid.One long day in the field he was bored to death while plowing,he started kicking the spokes with his foot and accidently got his foot stuck between the spokes pulling him under the tractor and wringing his leg off. They saved his life but he lost his leg.Fenders might have prevented this.He recently passed away at a ripe old age

Dad tried several different types of fenders on the tractors I did fieldwork with when I was a real young kid but basicly they ALL got taken off and forgotten about. Two tractors, a couple green tractors that snuck onto the place had fenders, a jd R diesel and the 4010-D. We also put a set of Ford clamshell fenders on My Super H but after running Dad's M without fenders I may take those off. They have more of a curve over the tires than the stock IHC ones but they still did absolutely NO good at protecting the operator for mud or debris. Plus they make getting into the seat such a pain.

It's not about mud or debris, its more about keeping hands, legs, and bodies out of the tire's rotation. If there is fenders for it and you dont have them on and something does happen, then well you know...
I can see if one doesnt have fenders and they arent readily available. If having fenders wasnt such a good idea, then why do 99% of all new tractors have them. If I didnt have fenders on my 300U, I would not ride it. There is still some exposed tire, but like others have said, if you loose your balance, they are there. They may not stop you from getting ground up in a tire, but they will increase your chances of stabilizing yourself before that happens. I just dont like hearing about people gtting hurt on tractors is all. If one feels comfortable without them and they are of a reasonable age and experience, then I guess it's ok.
I guess I'm just trying to say that safety should be the #1 concern.

Over here, fenders, roll bar, and lights are required to pass inspection (along with brakes, good tires, etc)before you get plates (required). Over 25 HP has to have brake lights and a reverse light/alarm. The fenders on most of them are reinforced as a passenger seat. Works well until you get a drunk passenger. There's a guy in our little town that has a stub where his knee used to be because he was slipping off the back of the fender and stepped on the tire to push himself up. The tractor zooming along at 15-20 mph and minimal clearance between the tread and fender fixed him right up.
I go for the fenders because it seems that when I need to use the tractor, the weather is nasty and I can also take two dogs with me.

I grew up rideing on the fender of a 8N. For hours at a time. When I got my first H my son was small and set on my lap now he is to big for that . Now has to stand on the drawbar. But only for short rides with nothing behind the tractor.

This has been said before and I will say it again.
Passangers are NEVER a good idea on almost ALL tractors.

POLICE NEWS: Tractor runs over, hurts girl, 11, in Bell County

The young girl was riding on a tractor with her father at a housing site in a private construction area, Moffat Volunteer Fire Department Chief Hal Pagel said. As her father reversed the tractor, the young girl fell from her perch. One of the tractor’s smaller front wheels ran over her torso, Although the girl’s injuries were undetermined, Pagel said the accident could have been worse. A tractor attachment that weighed down the back end of the vehicle and soft ground where the accident happened made the girl’s injuries survivable

No such thing as a dumb safety question.
.
I've been thinking of putting a pair of '06 / '56 flattops on my M, if for no other reason than to have a place to put my coffee in the morning.

I grew up driving a Farmall H. Worked for several neighboring farmers who also had Hs and Ms plus the 300s through 450s. None of those tractors were equipped with fenders. In fact, until I started going to tractor shows about 15 years ago, I never knew that fenders were even an option. I do not know of anyone that ever got hurt or injured because of a lack of fenders on a tractor.

Frankly, I don"t see those little clamshell fenders protecting you from much. If you fall out of the seat, and don"t grab the fender to steady yourself on the way down, it"s not going to stop you from landing on the wheel and getting dragged off the tractor.

Mike: I guess I must have good balance, our H and 300 at home never had fenders. The 560 never had fenders until 75, when I installed a cab on 656 and put those flat tops on the 560. The H, 300 and 560 all did a lot of work in the bush, often times going over stumps and other debries.

I guess this is about the same type of debate as we are having here in Canada right now. Insurance Bureau has a simulator and it indicates drivers are 4 times more likely to have and accident when using a cell phone. Yet 80 of those folks that failed say they will continue to use the phone while driving. Insurance Bureau declared driving is a full time job. Driving those row crops without fenders was a full time job. But then do you think if you lost your balance with H-M fenders, would they save you?

When I first seen a tractor without fendersm I was like OMG someone could get killed. I would nor own a tractor without fenders. My 300u has fenders, but I still think they are inadequate as the top of the tires are still exposed and so are the sides down by the foot peds. This coming from a paranoid man tho...
