When you worked at a IH tractor dealership did you ever put that seal and retainer on the bottom of the steering motor on a 1066? I posted it here awhile back and got some good info and they said that it wouldn't last long,so I thought about taking it apart and wrapping some teflon around the retainer and see if that would make it swell out a little to stop leaking. Price for the seal and retainer is over $150.00,my labor is cheap this time of year,do you think this would work or if I replace the seal how long should it last and is there any tricks to installing it? Thanks

Telfon tape will not hold in that application at all. It will come off very quickly, dont even bother

I work in a shop that works on lots of red tractors. I have put in many a sleeve type seal on the bottom of the steering hand pump. The new seal will last for as long as the original one did. The secret is getting the proper new seal. The new seal should be about a 1/8 to 3/16 inch longer than the old one so that it is compressed that much. We have never had to put in the sleeve retainer. They never go bad. Dont over torgue the bottom bolts they are very senitive and can ruin the whole unit if over torgued.
