Howdy, Boys:
Is there any print information out there on history of the M&W Company? I am impressed by their innovative ideas and aggressive approach to offer products to improve the letter series Farmalls. I almost get the impression M&W was formed by some IH engineers - as a second career or afterhours business - who saw ways to make things even better than IH made them. When was it formed? When did it die? Did they only produce products for IH tractors, or other brands also? Where were they located? Did they offer anything besides live hydraulics, 9-speeds, govenors, hand clutches? mike

Hi, The only M&W product we bought was a turbo on the 756 when it had about 500 hours on. Very happy with it, quieted the noisy thing down, it now has 9500 hrs. Put in a head gasket and injection pump still has about 90 horse and runs well. Chuck

The W..Was Warsaw long since past his brother recently passed who owned Warsaw Implement Company in Minier IL. Which was a IH dealership until around 1970 we own the last tractor on his lot a 756..I know of a few of his ideas that were "borrowed" from farmer innovations that they took note of as the tractors passed through the dealership....Brake release is one even Howard said he owed my grandfather a cup or two of coffee for...

Mike: John d has most of it except the guys name. Not certain which is correct Almo or Elmo Miner. There was a lengthy write up about the man and his company, back 3 years ago in Antique Power mag. I still have that copy burried in storage somewhere. I'll dig that out and give you a date if you wish. Send an e mail.

During my farming days M-W big product was turbos for many of the early 6 cylinder diesels.

I only have second-hand knowledge of it from two sources - one was a long time IH mechanic in a local dealership, the other from someone who worked there sometime in the 60s.

According to what I was told.....an Illinois farmer who was frustrated by the large gap between 4th and 5th gears on his Farmall H or M had the inspiration for how to double the speed of gears 1-4 to add four speeds between 4th and 5th, thus making a "9-speed" transmission. He, with the help of one or two others, managed to make this work, and quite well. From that product, the M&W Gear Company was born.

Since Farmalls, particularly the H and M, were one of the most successful lines of tractors in the corn belt, there were a LOT of farmers who jumped at the chance to install this package in their tractors. Many IH dealerships would even install this kit on a brand new tractor for a small fee if the customer wanted it.

Flush with the success of this product, M&W went on to manufacture the "live pto" hand clutch unit, and pioneered the installation of live hydraulics on the Farmall line with a pump behind the distributor. I think this was available before IH decided to do the same thing.

Eventually, they added oversize thin-wall sleeve and piston sets, gear-reduction starters, stroker crankshafts, improved governors, throttle levers, and a basketfull of little gizmos like more convenient levers for the pto and belt pulley drives.

Many of their designs were copied by competitors such as Heisler, and to some degree, IH itself. As the H and M tractors evolved into the 350 and 450, the Farmall lines no longer provided the continued source of new tractors to improve. M&W products did, however, keep many old Farmalls working in the field alongside newer tractors for many years.

The company was eventually bought by outside investors, product lines changed, to include wagon gears and grain dryers. They no longer make the parts for the old Farmalls.

M&W is still in business, although their product line is totally different than it was 50 years ago. They are now a part of the Alamo group.

Is there anyone that still has a supply of the fiber disks for the hand clutch? Mine still works OK but I would like to secure a supply of spare part to keep it working.

Thanks, Gene

Hi Gene.

I see those fiber disks on eBay now and then when I am browsing around on there. Im not sure how you feel about buying on there ( I know some people here really do think eBay is a four letter word... ) but I believe there is at least a part number.

Tisco makes the aftermarket throttle lever for the H and the M, so I believe they also sell the fiber disk replacement for their part. That might be an option to try and see if it fits.

Good luck!

I just called these people and they have about everything needed to rebuil the M&W hand clutch. The fiber disks are approx. $70 each and it needs three. They also have seals, bearings, and the nut and lock. They do not carry the metal disks or the little leather cover over the shift lever.
