2404 Loader advice needed

While lifting about a 750# crate with my 2404 IH tractor w/ 2000 loader, I heard a small crunching noise, and the loader would not lift any higher. After getting the crate disconnected and the tractor moved, the loader will not lift at all, and the bucket won't curl either. It is powered by a front crankshaft driven pump (17 GPM). The pump shaft is not slipping, and there are no hoses broken. Is it possible that a relief valve stuck open? Where would be a good place to start checking for a problem?

follow up: Finally had a nice day a few weeks ago to look at this problem. The key to the hydraulic pump coupling had sheared. The pump shaft was turning under no load, but would slip when a load was applied. The keyway in the pump shaft was damaged, but I turned the pump up on end, filled the seal cavity with water, and mig welded the keyway area. Cut a standard piece of keystock, reassembled, back in business!

J,

You need a pump.

The gear has split right off of that shaft, the teeth are all pulled or the shaft has twisted off inside the pump.

That was the "crunch" you heard.

A crunching noise isnt good. I would drain a little hydraulic fluid and look for any metal pieces. If the oil looks good, then most likely the pump is still good, but not necessarily. I myself would crack open the output hose of the pump and see if any oil coms out while the pump is running, Might also, try loading it up by trying to raise the lift. If the oil increases in leakage through the cracked hose, the pump would seem to be good and the problem is in a control part of the system. For troubleshooting that, well I dunno what I'd do then, try dif vavles. I dont know the particulars of you system, and am far from an expert, so I'm not of much help
