SMTA Engine Troubles

I was talking to a neighbor the other day, and he was telling me about some troubles with his MTA. He said this fall while picking corn it started acting strangely. You'd be going along and just all the sudden it would start smoking out the crankcase vent something horrible. After about 5 minutes it'd stop and go on just like nothing happens. Runs fine the whole time and doesn't miss, knock, or make any other unusual noises or lose power. His thought was that something was keeping a main or rod bearing from getting oil and it'd get hot because of the lack of lubrication and then it'd start getting oil again and when the oil hit the hot bearing it'd smoke. Anybody have any ideas whats wrong? Time for a total teardown and rebuild?

Mike

If, After warm up, It comes and goes intermittantly, on and on, it is probably a broken compression ring on one cylinder. I'd do a compression test to compare cylinders.

Well this may be hard to belive, but here goes we were pulling a SMTA ,it started getting weaker even though it still did not miss and run smooth, It smoked out of the crankcase vent at times this went on for 3 or 4 weeks. This tractor had a new engine and pulled strong at first. Then got weak and smoked out of the crankcase vent when we found the problem. It was the electronic egnition. Put a old dist. with points back in her and she was strong again and no smoke out of the vent,it must have been changing the time

Mike - I gotta agree with Will. What you're seeing is condensation (water mostly...) being boiled out of the crankcase on account of the engine coming up to normal temperature and worked hard.

I've seen it on all 3 of my tractors (SH, SM and Minnie Mo "U"). All usually see only light duty in cooler weather. So the bottom of the engine, the oil, etc never really get warmed up. But after pulling a plow or otherwise worked hard for a while they'll blow stuff out of the breather tube for 5 - 10 minutes or so. After that the "smoking" disappears.

So long as the cooling system is staying full and there's no trace of coolant evident in the oil, I'd not be too concerned.

Had it been were a bearing going bad it would have quickly been accompanied by ominous noises, followed quickly by parts leaving the engine and a walk back to the shed!

Pressure check the cooling system, then check for oil coolant in the oil, before dropping the pan, I agree with Will below. If it is leaking coolant, and the leak is pooling in the head it can "Flush" down into the pan and boil off all of a sudden. A leak may be more easily fixed for less money. JimN

He probably should drop the oil pan and check those bearings for wear. I agree with Will on a bearing just getting oil now and then and surviving. When he drains the oil he could look
for any metal particles. If he finds any, it's a good sign you have metal flaking off. Hal

A bearing will not go that long and then recover. It could have been some condensed water in the oil that got to the boiling point and vapored out.
