What paint should be used on the inside of a transmission housing? Doing an entire tranmission switch from one housing to another, and the one it's going into needs paint inside - fire at one time.

Thanks for any input.

If you paint it use Glyptol, Eastwood sells it.

what i would do if i was serious about doing what you said and agreeing with everyone else but i have a cast iron stove that gets a fire burnt in it everyday during the winter i have had it 7 yrs and nothing is wrong with it its not warped or cracked but if your sinking money into this thing i myself would take the one you have to a salvage somewhere and ask them if they had one like it and explain to them what your going to do and what you need and you would like to trade a good one out with the one you have might be surprised what you get just my 2 cents

Unless water was sprayed on tractor during fire, while the cast iron was still hot it is more than likely OK. The quick cool down from cold water hitting will crack and or warp cast iron.

The fire was a small shed fire - a bit bigger than a garden shed, but not much. The housing had been sitting in there for years w/out any gears, cover, etc. Fire was hot enough to burn the paint off, but I think that's about it. Most of the bolts are still in the holes, and there's old tranny fluid in the holes - not hot enough to burn the oil out of the holes. I'm pretty sure it's okay, but thanks for the thoughts on fire damage. (I hope it's okay- we're putting in in an H that will pull in the 7500 class regularly and maybe 8500 once in a while!)

Use it if ya want to, but the rear end/transmission housing is one of those things that is left after an H is parted out, and there is no demand for such a thing. Should be dozens of them just laying around looking for a new home, and wouldn't cost any more that current scrap iron price. Years ago we put a used wide front under a JD 4020. The wide front had been through a fire, but didn't appear to have been hot enough to do any real damage other than scorch the paint. Put the loader on the tractor and went to pick up a round bale. That wide front just sort of folded up, and then snapped off one of the spindles.

I'd be a bit cautious about using a cast iron housing that has been through a fire, particularly if it got hot enough to burn and scorch the inside. It could be warped, or even weakened from the fire, and could crack or otherwise fail when put back into use.

If you decide to go with that housing, try your local electrical wholesaler. Ask for red epoxy varnish for motor & transformer windings. Its about the toughest you'll find. ken

I've always thought that the varnish used looked like an electrical varnish called Glyptal that GE used to make. We used to use a lot of it at work. Don't know if it is even available anymore.

I think that your suggestion of the red epoxy varnish is a good one. I would add that I would want to get the surface very clean and oil free before applying it. I don't know what mischief it might cause if it came loose.
