Hello, I have a '41 H with a maneto. When the weather is wet(rainy) and cool the tractor won't start, won't even fire. Any idea what the culprit could be. I changed out the coil in the mag last summer, due to missing when hot, so that is new.
Thanks for the help. YC

Canby, I can top that, I had a 1938 Plymouth with the flathead 6 and it wouldnt start even if the weatherman merely predicted rain. I agree with the other gents, any cap moisture or dirt or oily film or cracks or any faulty plug wires can be at fault. Id thoroughlly clean n dry (use hair dryer) any cap or coil towers and once all is clean n dry inside n out you may try some of that ignition spray sealer on the exterior. Im not familair with IHC mags (if thats what you have) but on the Deere units they have vent holes that can get clogged up but they need to be kept open for proper venting n breathing. If the plug wires are old Id replace them as a matter of good maintenance.

Ol John T and all

A few possibilities/solutions:

The insides of the magneto must be scrupulously clean. Any dust, etc. under the coil cap, on the outside of the coil winding and the inside the distributor cap can cause it to short out when it’s damp. Also the coil cover must be gasketed against dust & moisture. If the cover gasket is cracked/broken replace it with a new one!

Either the coil cover or dist cap has a hairline crack. If so the cracked part should be replaced.

Make sure the spark plugs are clean and properly gapped. Dirty plugs and spark gap exceeding specification are difficult for a magneto to fire.

A magneto-equipped tractor must have solid copper plug wires, and the plug wire insulation must be in good shape. RFI suppression or “resistor” plug wires just don’t work well with magnetos – especially under damp conditions.

Finally if your H sits outside, a “boot” cut from a plastic antifreeze jug, an old inner tube, or similar. Then stick the boot over the mag to shield it from rain, etc. whenever your tractor is parked.

I have a 49 H with a magneto that will not start after a rain. I had been keeping her in a shed and never had a problem. I moved her outside to make room to work on another tractor, and that is when the trouble started. It took me a while to figure it out but now I know. Somehow (I haven’t figured why or how) water is getting into the point compartment and shorting/corroding everything. Heavy dew is ok but when it rains she gets flooded. I have had to clean it out twice the first time was a total rebuild with new gaskets etc. For NOW I am keeping the mag covered with a plastic bag when I am not using it. This solution has worked well thru the last 3 storms. NOT a permanent solution but til I get more time it works.

Good luck troubleshooting

Take off the cap and dry it with a blow dryer. Clean it real well with solvent and dry again. then spray it with silicone spray and let dry again. Make sure you use good wires I lke magnetic suppression wires from Sorensen or Belden. They have no resistance, but prevent static. JimN

Inspect your distributor cap very carefully. May be a crack that allows water to get in there.

Last summer, the fire ants got me by building their home in there.
