Would an IH person please tell me about the rear
end thing,s,or glitch,s that Ive heard about on the 1486,s
I dont see anything wrong with this model , it has good power, good cab, nice look,s, nice sound,nice interior which is more than I can say about case, or JD and the JD,s are so narrow in the door, that you have to be careful not to step into engine when it,s running,
dont like the JD,s round front cab, am alway,s nervous about engine running when I get into a 4430, or similar,
IH made their cab,s tasteful, so youd wanna spend time in there,and be comfy, and listen to the radio,and have the a/c on low,

two brothers down the road from be both had 1486s. both toasted the rear end gears. they complained that the 1486 ran the same rear and as the 1086 and that was the problem. what they failed to mention, they had the injector pumps set way up, then bought bigger plows and disks, then had too much tire slip, so they put radials on the rear and added more weight along with the duals. the mechanic that did the repairs told both of them to turn em down but they knew better. they leared after the second time.

The problems you describe are the reason IH came out with the 1566 and 1586. They knew they were near the capacity of that chassis, and of course there are those that just had to push it.

Rear end failure is not uncommon from other stories I've heard, and previous experience. We have a 1486 that locked into 2 gears at once and managed to take out a ton of expensive parts in the rear end. It's a good old workhorse, but we also have a JD 4430 that's a heck of a lot nicer to get on and off from. The cab door on the IH opens the wrong way and the steps up are pretty steep. The 4430 is much nicer to climb up on.

Mostly it is the carrier that fails because of turning under load with duals with the brakes as this works hard on the side gears and spider and eats into the case or carrier how ever ya want to call it . Did one 1466 that had failed from this over time . What we did on that one was have it machined and installed needel bearings . Same holds ture on the 86 seires.

As far as glitches go, the shifting was the main one. Mostly because of not being kept adjusted, and operator misuse. Remember, the High/Low/Reverse lever is only to be shifted when the tractor is at a total standstill. Those gears are collar-shifted and trying to shift on the move will only cause grinding, which is not only hard on the shift collars, but also gives the linkage a good rattle. The speed gears- 1, 2, 3, 4 are sliding gears, it is usually best to shift them at a standstill or a slight roll, but they can be shifted on the move somewhat with a little practice. Keeping the clutch pedal linkage, dump valve linkage, and transmission brake linkage adjusted will give you the best shifting performance. Without going into a ton of detail on how the TA works, the dump valve keeps it from "binding up" in both Direct Drive and TA at the same time by dumping the oil pressure out of it when the clutch pedal is pushed in. When it is out of adjustment and the TA binds up, it creates the effect of being in two gears at once, causing the transmission shift levers to be very hard to get out of gear. If the operator then forces the lever, bad things happen with the linkage. The transmission brake is a little arm with a pad that contacts a gear in the speed transmission when the clutch pedal is fully depressed to stop the gears and make for an easy shift. To prevent excessive wear to the pad, don't fully depress the clutch pedal until the tractor has come to a stop. Push it down about 3/4 of the way, use the brakes to stop, push the pedal down the rest of the way to engage the trans brake, and make your shift. As far as major problems go, I have heard of several low-hour ring gear and pinion failures on 1086's and 1486's. Remove the top hitch link bracket from the rear of the transmission case, and you can easily inspect the ring gear. Look for flaking of the teeth.

Hi Gary,
It's the same old junk of lazy people not knowing about mechanical design,
Or just being plain dumb, and not caring,,, ?
Or,,, knowing how to use a feature on a cretain tractor, or just Being plain stupid, and not having mechanical sympathy on moving part's that if they arnt used like their supposed to be used?
they will end up failing,
But,,, alot of people are really stubborn, and end up ruining something cause another person told them the WRONG WAY IN THE 1ST PLACE,
and Like a dumb Ostrich that it's head is in the sand, just igore all the sign's cause it's not their tractor or combine, and they could care less, or arent smart enough to care anyway!
i am Like this with my 2670,
i start it, let it warm up, gently push the gear lever into 1st, or reverse,
and push the clutch in, and wait for it to catch,
then,,, I move it into gear and back out,
I was going for a spin in it yesterday, and going thru the gear's and taking it easy when going thru the powershift,
It likes to be clutched when going down in gear's and not moving the lever, as It kinda balk's, and It kinda unnerved me, so i took it real easy from then on as i didnt wanna mess anything up,
