I"m rebuilding a 1940 farmall A it came to me in boxes I put together It didn"t run . I made alot of mistakes. 2 nd time I put the head on the gasket from victor said to put a sealer on top I didn"t under some other advice. After tourqing the head twice . I did a compression test got 65 lbs in three cylinders and 35 in one . I spun the valves in that cylinder and it went up to 45lbs . What number should I be looking for on the test . Is the test going to higher after It runs or should I just take off the head put sealer on it . thank you Tom

Couple things, if this is the newer graphite-based headgaskets, if you put it on once, throw it away and put on a new one. The gasket should stick to the surfaces so well it will literally tear apart when removed.

The old steel-backed asbestos gaskets can probably be reused, the sealer I've heard mentioned the most is K&W CopperCoat.

The metal "fire ring" in the gasket of either kind should crush down and deform under the head's clampload...that said, make sure you use a click wrench (torque wrench).

I like to work on the head and block surface with a flat machinist's scraper (no radius) as this will generally do a super job to the point of making the original single-point tool marks (planer marks) visible again, and highlight any areas of bad pitting.

You got bad advice on the sealer. If the gasket manufacturer says to use sealer, I would use sealer. But with compression readings that low and one of them half what the other 3 are, I suspect something else is wrong there too. If it has new rings, compression may be somewhat lower until they seat, but it ought to be about the same in all 4 cylinders.

Like Toro said, check the valve lash to make sure you don't have valves open. Did you have the valve seats gone over? They may be leaking in that low cylinder.

Are you sure the valves have enough clearance?
I would set them at .017" cold. Did you use the old sleeves and pistons? The sleeves and rings may be worn if you did. This could be one of your problems with low conpression. Hal

Also, if it was a basket case and the old parts used, the pistons and cylinders are likely mis-matched. You would have the same problem with bearing fit, that would show up after you work it a while.

I thought about the bearings too. I bought one of the Farmall A's that the engine was a basket case and all the pistons seized. I bought a new sleeve kit and had the crankshaft polished, it needed .002" undersize bearings and I put new valves and springs in the head. Ran like new one. Hal
