Farmall Re-Manufactory: Your thoughts...

Hello! I read with great interest the articles in the Quad City newspaper about the history and closing of the Farmall plant in Dubuque, IA. I was hoping that a small portion of it could be preserved as a history center (dare I mention it here: like the JD Pavillion)? Anyway, about 5-6 years ago, a bunch of us on the Oliver Forum had a lot of fun discussing the possibility of building an Oliver "Re-Manufactory"...a "factory" that remanufactures older tractors for resale and use. We thought it would be a good way to rebuild and market quality, dependable, rebuilt tractors. As I read the Dubuque article, I wondered if this idea would work for older, Red tractors. What are your thoughts?

You got the "UP RIVER" part of the article right but the FARMALL Plant is not in Dubuque, IA. It's in ROCK ISLAND, IL....actually about three miles straight WEST (down river) of the JD COMMONS, right on the MOLINE - ROCK Island border. JD was the only ag company with a plant in Dubuque. Their little utility tractors and now construction equip. is built there.

I think it is a really good idea, but there would be a lot of hurtles to jump in order to get it started and keep it going. If we could come up with a way i would be a part of it.

I also agree with JohnG about manufarturing new parts and conversion kits for the old tractors like the F series among others.

It's not realistic for many reasons. Many people/businesses restore tractors, but that is no the same as remanufacture. As stated below it is an excellent way to go broke, and the safety requirements, and soon to be pollution requirements will eat you alive.

Somebody was rebuilding Ford 8N's and Jubilee's a while back..I remember seeing them at some show.. Rebuilding Farmall Letter series especially the Supers might be something to look into...I'll bet good ones would sell. Of course you can't hire anybody but "partners" and few of them, or all the safety and health issues and laws will "eat you up". Well, if you can raise pah-lenty of money to start with, you might be able to pull it off.

Merlin: I think we best stick to working for nothing in our own back yard. It wont be quite as painful as owning stock in a remanufacturing plant.

I think the lawyers would be get getting rich over the lack of current safety equipment. Now, if you were to sell new parts, like engine blocks, starter conversions for F-series, steel wheels, etc, to get parts tractors back in operating order, then that would be great. I know where a few are that could use just a few new parts to be usable again. It always seems there are a few common parts that break. Now, if you make these parts, you can have a lot of dead tractors come back to being useful again.

I would like to see new cast F-20 radiator parts again, along with the original kerosene manifolds and blocks, and sheet metal (hoods, fuel tanks, grills). I would buy stock in just such a venture.

I'd buy one. I'd work there. I'd buy stock in it.
