After reading the posts and stories about the Rock Island assembly plant, I got to thinking where my tractors were built. I have 4 Farmall M"s that were all built at the Rock Island plant. I believe my F-20"s and Regular were built in Chicago. I also have a 1941 B and 1952 Super C. Were they built at Rock Island also, or somewhere else?

Ms were all in Rock Island.

F-20s were all Rock Island.

Regulars after mid-1926 were Rock Island, very early Regulars (about the first 6,000) were Chicago.

41 B Was Chicago.

American 1952 Super C was Louisville.

The B was built at Rock Island, the Super C at Louisville.

My book says that 8781 B`s and 1968 Bn`s were built in Louisville. Is this true?

That's what Ken Updike says, he is usually right.

Were the parts for the Louisville Super C made at the Rock Island foundry (like the Super M's), or at Louisville, or somewhere else?

The limb broke off with me on one answer in this thread already, but I will say that all or most of the castings on my C have an L cast in them, which I assume means they were cast in Louisville. I have heard of parts for the SM being shipped to Louisville, but I can't confirm that. I have not heard of anyone mentioning an L casting on a Super M, though, only as a prefix on the serial number tag.

All the Super M parts were cast/machined/sub-assembled at FARMALL and shipped to LVL for final assembly. A Gentelman I worked with there who started in assembly back in the mid-1930's told me that.

The recent news article about the Rock Island plant mentioned a plant in Springfield, Ohio. I was wondering what tractors were made there, when did it open, when did it close? I grew up near Columbus (close to Springfield) and later worked for an IH dealership in the 70's.

Thanks

Jack

Springfield, OH was a truck plant. There was also a stamping plant for sheetmetal in SHADYSIDE, OH that made the hoods & sheetmetal for the 2+2's. Otherwise the truck division & tractor plants really didn't "SHARE Parts" much. The other AG plants made a HUGE amount of parts for the other plants. Cabs, 3-point hitch arms, all the hoods & side panels, battery boxes, cab steps, etc. came from IH E.Moline Plant, siderails and LOTS of other heavy steel formed parts like the steel pieces for the front frame half of the 2+2 came from the old P&O Plow WORKS in Canton, IL. Quite a few gears, shafts, several truck loads of castings every day came form LVL, and also the Memphis & Indianapolis Foundrys. Engines all came from Melrose Pk. IL, except the German (Nuess)diesel's and the few 686 gas engines used in some very early 686/H86's built when I first started at FARMALL. Those came from INDY if I remember right. We built 2 maybe 3 of those per day.
