A guy wants to trade me a Behlen power steering unit (torque generator ONLY) that is supposed to be in working condition.

He had it on a tractor ("M", IIRC), and removed it many years ago, and it has been sitting on a shelf since.

What is a fair price range for these units?

Thanks for ANY ideas!

I have a COMPLETE, working perfect when removed, Behlen PS setup for a SMTA. Even includes shortened steering shaft, (if you want to see it hanging in front of the steering wheel). That's why I removed it. I wouldn't sell it for less than $450.

Gordo.

Since you say torque generator only I wouldn't go over $125 to $150 with no way to know if its a good working unit.

D,

Besides possibly needing shaft seals, and having the case segments resealed, do you know of anything else that commonly goes wrong with them, to watch out for?

I have no use for it, and will probably wind up selling it, but it is a way to get SOMETHING out of a debt owed me!

There could be several things worn in unit that would make it not worth fixing but they last okay if clean oil is all that goes through them. Check to see if it turns free and the shafts don't have mutch side to side or end play. If output shaft has anything other than a very slite amount of play in any dirrection in housing I would be careful. All shafts in unit run on needle bearings,if bearing goes bad shaft usualy is also. The shaft seals are O rings. the rear seal that can be seen is just a dust seal. The spool and cam can go bad and unit won't steer right. Housing gaskets should be same thickness as old if replaced. Does the type he has have a input shaft that steering wheel fits on or input shaft with keyway? Also Some PS housings have a fluid reservoir built in. Body is biger with a filler hole.

The unit has keyed shafts out both ends.

It is the plain unit, NO reservoir.

Same guy I'm thinking of Bob? Seems to me I asked him about that a couple of years ago and he wanted $500 for the whole system. As I'm sure you know by now, Jim's price varies wildly day to day.

I did visit with our friend Jim today, but didn't find anything that much fun!

The torque generator belongs to a relative of SWMBO who owes me$$$!

Actually, Jim has a MF 65 gasser in tough shape he's had the head off of for years. He was telling me he may close up in the spring, and move on, scrapping out what is left.

I said I'd like a chance at the MF 65 before it goes for scrap, and suddenly it got so valuable he couldn't even put a price on it!

Jim isn't going anywhere. He's comfortable here. He walks to the bar, and after a while someone gets tired of him and the cops bring him home. Now why would anyone leave an arrangement like that?

A few years back I was helping my BIL with his pickup. We drove it up on ramps and locked the E brake. It froze on - lack of use. He had to get back to Lakota. We pull the wheels and brakes to release the E brake in the drum. The spring keepers broke. All the shops were closed (sunday) and couldn't reach anyone at home. We go to Jims. He wasn't there, so I poked around and found two rusty (but functional) spring keepers to replace the bad ones on BILs truck.

A couple of weeks later I found him at the bar and told him I had grabbed the two. $5 a piece! Oh well, I paid the man.

Hi , Recent prices on ebay for a complete setup goes for about 300-450 . Remember that those include the pump , lines , most of the time the shaft and the mounts ( maybe not for the tractor you own but it's included ).

I've seen them go for $400 and higher, but that is a bit much in my opinion.
