I am a teacher at an ag school in SE MN. We are doing some work on a students wk-40 Serial # wkc3489 with a red diamond 450 Serial # 11135. The student does not think that this is the original engine. Does anyone know if it is? If not was this from a truck? We are in need of a manifold for this engine. Will an original manifold from a wk-40 work on this engine?

We made a manifold for one of our Wk 40's . Yes the 450 takes the same manifold. Yes you can still find starters for WK 40,s.

In regard to a starter. Do you happen to know brand name and model # ??

Do you know of anyone or anywhere where we can purchase one?

Thank you

This is a little OT. My son has a 1936 WK 40. Bell housing has place to mount a starter. Is there a starter available at this point in time that will fit or any orginal ones around?? Any help or suggestions appreciated.

The retrofit of a Red Diamond truck engine into the WK-40 tractor was a very common method of making this tractor into a real workhorse. While a nice engine to hear run, the original was lacking power for some applications. Also when it came time for a rebuild, truck parts were more common than ag parts so the impetus for a changeout was there. As for the manifold commonality, yes, the manifold from a tractor engine will fit onto the Red Diamond 450 head. The head is only 1 piece whereas the tractor head is 2 piece, but it will make no difference to the manifold. These manifolds are very hard to come by and extremely expensive for replacements. Hopefully your manifold is OK.

yes your engine came from a truck. the original engine is 298ci. i have 2 1/2 wk-40's right now. i don't know about the manifold from a 450. the 401 will switch but not sure about the 450.

I dont think it is original either.I had 6 inch irrigation pump that had a Red Diamond engine in it dont know if it was original or not,but it had headers and no muffler loudest thing i ever heard run could hear it from miles away.

I am more or less guessing here, but I think your student is correct. The red diamond engine would not be original. For more help, visit oldihc.org or the red power magazine website.
