I am degreasing 59 years of baked on grease and dirt from my 48 H. In doing so I had to remove the Mag assy at the oil filler housing. I was careful to wire the gear, from moving, after I pulled it out to avoid a timing problem when I reinstalled it.Now that it is ready to go back on, if the gear is off a notch either way, will I have to retime the engine? Second question, If I need to retime, what is the easiest way to tell if the #1 cyl is TDC?

TIMING THE MAGNETO:

Timing of the magneto can be changed by loosening the two magneto attaching screws and swinging the top of the magneto toward the crankcase for retard and away for advance. The impulse coupling missing speed is 150 r.p.m.

When replacing the magneto, crank the engine so that the no.1 piston is at TDC. Remove the distributor cap, and turn the magneto until the distributor rotor points toward no.1 on the cap, then fasten the magneto to the bracket. Be sure the prongs on the coupling engage the slot in the drive shaft. Next rotate the top of the magneto toward the crankcase as far as possible and crank the engine again to no.1 TDC. Now move the magneto away from the crankcase until the impulse coupling trips. Complete the tightening of the holding cap screws; the engine is now timed.

To tell if it's on TDC, remove the no.1 spark plug and place your thumb over the hole and slowy crank over the engine, you should feel compression, but feel carefully when the pressure JUST stops, it's on TDC.

If this is not the info you need or you need more help, let me know.

Good luck!

With the mag if you have not turned the mag or the engine and reinstall with the rotor pointing same place it will be ok. The mag has a bar and seats in the slot so the only way to screw up would be to turn mag over before installing or turning engine over with the mag out of the tractor.

There should be a single notch on the crankshaft pulley, and a pointer on the front cover of the engine. That's TDC on #1 cylinder, but that could be TDC on the exhaust stroke or TDC on the compression stroke.

IIRC, it's the single notch. There may also be a double notch, which is for checking advance with the engine running. Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

The easiest way to find TDC is to remove #1 spark plug, put your thumb over the spark plug hole, and slowly rotate the engine until air starts whistling out around your thumb. Align the mark, and you're at TDC.

HOWEVER, if you marked everything, made sure nothing fell apart, and didn't rotate the engine while you had the mag off, you should be able to put it right back on, and the tractor will start and run just like it did before.

You guys are a great help. I think I will be ok, since i didn't turn the engine and tried to lock the mag gear in place when I removed it. It is good to know about the notch on the pulley to align with the timing pin. The thumb over the spark plug hole will undoubtedly work well. It ill be a little while before I start it up again, but I will let you know how it went. THANKS AGAIN
