Replacing Upper Bushing in H

Last time I took a ride up the road on my Super H, the front end shimmied pretty bad. Today I found out why. With the lid off the steering gearbox, the gear turned on the shaft, and the shaft moved forward and back about 1/8" in each direction.

Top bushing is definitely shot.

How bad is it to get that bushing out once the front end is dropped out of the bottom? Is it pulled or driven out?

Had same problem on my M. The biggest problem was getting the gear off the shaft. Replaced both upper bushing and seal and it still leaked oil so i finally packed it with shaft seal from a boat shaft journal and then packed it with grease. Problem completely solved. No wobble, no leak.

i replaced a few of the bolster and bushings on my m's. i used a pipe coupling, i think 1" or 1 1/4 and a piece of all thread to pull the seal in. lay a piece of iron with a hole drilled in it for the all thread across the top of the bolster, and set the seal n top of the pipe fitting. the pipe needs to be just a litle smaller than the outside diameter of the seal. a stack of washers will work too. be sure to clean up the shaft with emery cloth so the seal has a smooth surface to ride on. you can use the all thread to pull the bushings in too.

Dennis - The upper bushing can be driven out either up or down. However when I attempted to drive it down on mine the bushing shell began to collapse. So I used a chisel to slice the bushing vertically lengthwise, then sorta folded it up with a screwdriver and fished it out.

The new bushing is easily driven in from above.

Tip: The seal below the bushing is bugger to get into place. If the seal is bad (and I'll guarantee it is...), leave it in place. Then rather than filling the steering box with oil, pack it solid with good grade grease. The grease will lube the gears just fine but won't leak out through the old seal.

Very reassuring. Thank you Bob M! I've read your many posts on packing the housing with grease, and I think that's the way I'm going to go, especially after seeing the mess that gear oil made on dad's 400.

We're going to use the old beer can trick to get the sector gear to sit solid on the shaft, but that fore-aft wobble as I twisted the steering shaft...
