This afternoon I saw a Super H, serial #21092 AJ. If I read correctly in Guy Fay's International Data Book, the serial number codes indicate that this tractor is a distillate tractor with a Rockford clutch. The motor does, indeed, have the small gasoline tank indicating a gas start and distillate run. Nowhere in either the Data Book or in Fay's book Farmall Letter Series Tractors can I find any indication of Super H's with any motor other than the 164 cube inch gas. Does this tractor have its original motor, or does it have a replacement? Thanks for your help.

To check engine for correct type look on side of block up above oil filter. You should find C 164 on casting. Next look on toward front of engine some and near same level for a date code. Something like 9-17-Y 10-5-Y or 11-13-Y or 12-23-Y . You should fall somewhere between that range of numbers but don't take that as a fact if its not. Next look for a flat pad in same general area for the engine serial # stamped in. If its original it should have the A stamped in after or under #. Let me know what you find.

Out of 537 super H tractors on my serial number list sixteen of them have a DJ suffix, fifteen of them have an AJ suffix and three of them are listed with a MJ suffix. If the list is representative of numbers made that means a little less than 3% were AJ, about 3% were DJ and very few MJ's were built. Would like to know what state you saw this tractor in. Thanks, Pat in Wis

Yes, the Super H was available in a distillate option (I just checked my owner"s and parts manuals), they"re quite rare for their 1953/54 production period during which distillate prices weren"t that much of a bargain. At the time, Super Hs could be ordered with a whole lotta options, or with deletes like my 54 Super H that was ordered from the factory with no hydraulics at all. I"d like to call it a Stage 2, but I can"t really since the live hydraulics were the real distinguishing feature between the Stage 1 and 2s. (yes, the battery box is in a different location ans the front bolster is square but... sometimes I wish I had that live hydraulics).

Distillate engine was same cubic inches as gas engine in all series A through 450 so your engine is probably original.

I believe Farmalls could be ordered for use with Distillate up until and including the 450. Not many were made, but I'm pretty sure they are out there. The numbers dwindled until there was no profit in the process. (It might have been the X00 series), someone will be definitive on it. JimN

Jim: I don't know much about this, however if you remember close to a year ago there were two Super HV dual fuel in an auction. As I remember they fetched close to $25,000. each.
