Hi, I have a 674D that's about to wear me out. The problem I'm having now is it all started when I noticed coolant leaking from the weep hole in the water pump. I Replaced the water pump. Sense I was replacing the water pump I thought I should replace the thermostat too but it didn't have one. I installed a thermostat and then noticed when the engine got to running temp. it would start to push coolant out passed the radiator cap . Took the cap off and found that the cap was missing the rubber sealing washer and the cap was split also. I replaced the cap with a 7 pound cap. Now when I run the engine it would push water out of the over flow hose so I put a recovery tank on, but at running temp. it will overflow the tank . Now I have found that, with the engine cold and with the cap off of the radatior, full of coolant while cranking the engine, coolant shoots straight up out of the radiator about 10 to 12 inches and when the engine starts it pushes out coolant but does not run hot . I really don't work the tractor long and hard enough to really make it run hot but I suspect it would if I really worked the tactor hard and long. I had the head off about 6 months ago and had it re-worked and surface ground but not pressure checked. The engine is not getting any coolant in the engine base and is not leaking any on the out side of the head, but when I crank the engine with the radiator cap off it sure acts like it's compression related. Any body got a clue what may be going on ? Thanks for your time and any help
Scotty

Hi Scotty
I have a 574D which is basiclly the same tractor, 674D has 10 more HP & runs at 2400RPM full throttle. Mine was made in Britain withthe german Eng. It also has the Bosch Injectors and pump. These injectors have the coolant around them [like wet sleeves] which this Eng. also has. If you pull the injectors the coolant will run out. If your 674D was made state side then someone else may know if they are wet or dry injectors. Looks like you may have to pull the head. Janicholson has some good tests too.
Let us know what you find. Eldon from Ont.

Thanks Eldon, When you say wet injectors does that mean that cooant circulates around the outside of the injector and with the engine full of coolant if I was to take out a injector coolant would come out the injector hole without cranking the engine ? These injectors don't seem to be the wet kind. Would the coolant circulate around the injector or the outside of the brass sleeve that the injector fits in ? Scotty

Scotty My fault. I missed mentioning the brass sleeves. Yes the coolant circulates around the brass sleeves. Just be careful when removing the injectors, some times the brass sleeve wants to come too. Good luck, Let us know how you make out..... ..... Eldon from Ont.

It sounds like its compression related, but I would pull the thermostat and see if you have the same problem with this removed. Bernard le Mecano
that posts on here is very knowledgeable about these tractors. He may have seen this problem before. Hal

Thanks Hal. The tractor does the same thing with no thermostat also. I even tried cranking the engine with the water pump belt off because I've had a water pump before that had the impeller pressed on backward and caused problems like this but nit still shoots water up out of the radiator. It may be a blown head gasket. If you pulled the head I would have it magafluxed. I had a GM engine that had a lot of blowby. If you pulled the oil filler cap off, oil would blow out there.
I thought the compression was blowing into crankcase. When I pulled the head I found a deep groove in the cylinder wall from a broken piston ring. Had to pull the engine and have it bored. Hal

I Believe there is a drastic Head gasket leak, or in a casting. To check, there are several tests:
Put a pressure tester on it for 15 minutes if the gauge reading goes down consistently it leaks.
Pull the oil drain plug out until the last thread and see if there is coolant in the oil.
Pull the injectors(I know, but what alternatives are there)and turn it over to see if Coolant comes out a hole.
Use a combustion gas tester to see if the bubbles in the radiator are combustion gases.
(also make sure your new cap has the correct seat length, there are two lengths and IH takes the long one.) Good luck, this make take several doses of luck, JimN

Thanks JimN. It sure seems like a head gasket to me but I'm not getting any water in the base of the engine or leaking out externaly and I also don't see any steam out the exhaust but I have not pulled the injectors and cranked the engine over to see if any water comes out yet. I don't mind pulling the head back off but it would be cool if I had some signs of water showing up some where. I would feel better about pulling off the head, but some times I got to do things like this just to find out what's up.
