O.K. I"ve adjusted my carb so that it doesn"t smoke,it will sit and idle perfect,And it does not hesitate when throttled up.BUT when in about 1/2 throttle up to full throttle a constant blue flame comes out my straight pipe of about 8inches and stays till I throttle down, going back down to idle its a spitting and larger flames appear. Whats going on??

Thanks to all!! Started checking my timing when I noticed my pipe leaning over found that my pipe and top of manifold had a lot of bad welds on the top,This might not be my only problem but I"ll start here.Didn"t like that straight pipe anyway. You don"t know what your buying from people sometimes until you have it a few years and start fixing others mistakes!

Steve,

This reminds me of mah ol" GMC pickup, when I"d mash down on the pedal, flames would shoot out the tailpipe, and she"d take off like a rocket! So why not just put an elbow on the exhaust pointing back, and take advantage of the jet age??

Joking aside, my first thought was also timing too far advanced, but I"m now thinking you are very retarded. No, I mean the engine timing is very retarded! I"m in rare form this morning. Anyway, like the others, I"d play with the timing.

The problem when you throttle back down is almost certainly due to hot carbon or hot valves, when you get the flames under control, I think your throttle down problem will take care of itself.

Steve, If you think your problem is spark timing, I would suggest the Case/IH tune-up specification booklet as a place to start for your tractor's ignition settings. When I check and set ignition timing for the first time on a specific tractor, I try to determine the engine's configuration. For example on an IH C-264 engine, what pistons does it have -- flat top, fire-crater, high altitude? Which cylinder head -- one for kerosene, gasoline, LP-Gas? Also, what spark advance curve is in the distributor? This needs to match the engine configuration. When I think I know the configuration and the engine otherwise looks mechanically sound, I then use the Case/IH tune-up book to make ignition settings. Since most of us don't know the actual history on many older tractors, "customized changes" in an engines past can create "interesting" problems. A good tractor mechanic is handy to have around at such times. Especially, one familiar with the tractor model in question. Hope this helps some.
Mark

Check your ignition timing.I would say she"s well advanced .

Great idea I'm no mechanic but I thought because it cranks very easy"1/2 a revolution" my timing should be close

Steve - Keep in mind that if the centrifugal advance is messed up timing can be dead on at cranking speed/slow idle, yet be retarded as much as 40 deg at governed RPM.

Before getting in too deep with other stuff, again I recommend putting a timing light on it and see what the ignition is doing!

Steve - Sounds like the ignition timing is off - like perhaps the centrifugal advance is not working?

Suggest throwing a timing light on it. It should be 0 deg (TDC) at slow idle, then advance to 35 - 40 deg BTC at high idle.
