Can a cut out off a 6 volt generator be used on a 12 volt generator???

Thanks,
Andy.

put a 12 volt regulator on it rather than trying to use a cutout.

Andy, Although it might latch in, I dont like the idea and would advise you to get one of the correct voltage. Its (a 6 volt relay) designed to latch at a lil over 6 volts, which a 12 volt genny would certainly deliver, but Im unsure of its coils current ratings and drop out and would just get a new 12 volt relay n be done with it.

Not being more or less electrically savy, I asked a friend the purpose of the Generator Cutout.

I was told that the purpose of this unit is to prevent motorization of the generator by the battery when the unit is not running...and as a consequence, with the belt on the generator, it will not turn and in all events run the battery down?

Does that make sense???

Tom, Not only does what you say make sense, its absolutely correct. That DC Genny and a DC Motor are basically the same thing. If you turn them they put out DC Voltage but if you apply DC Voltage then they spin like a motor. What the Cutout Relay does is act as a Normally Open contactor between the genny and battery. When the genny reaches a certain voltage HIGHER then the battery it closes so the gennys output can get to n charge the battery, but then when you turn the tractor off and the gennys output voltage drops, it opens otherwise just as you say the battery would discharge through the genny plus the genny would overhea trying to run as a motor but that belt stopping it.

You can go to the head of the class lol

Best Wishes n God Bless

No the pul in winding is not the correct voltage. A resistor would be needed, and mounted inside, and it is not a good idea unless there is no other solution. JimN

Looks like we agree as usual, I dont like the idea although it could latch in.
