How can I tell if my tractor has a standard 12 gpm or the 17 gpm version? Can I safely swap out the 17 gpm to give more power to the loader?

gwill: The 17 gpm pump will not lift anymore than the 12 gpm pump, it only does it faster. On a loader, most of the time those extra gpm will give you an advantage especially when your doing both lift and bucket function at the same time. Quite often on a lift the added gpm will give you that extra snap you need to break loose material from pile. The 17 gpm pump will also be quite beneficial when crowding the loader into pile and lifting at same time.

However on a brute force lift the 17 gpm pump will not lift anymore. KB mentioned you might try increased presure in you relief valve. I've been there and done that, don't waste your time. I'm not sure if 504 has the same external high presure hydraulic line from pump to to relief and control valves as 560. If it has, here is what I have done, install a double spool control valve with power beyond capability and higher presure relief than tractor system. Go directly from pump to the added valve, then outlet from valve continues into tractor regular system.

I did this with both Farmalls 300 and 560. 300 had an optional pump, forget but think it was 12 gpm. My 560 had 17 gpm pump. I wouldn't go more than 500psi higher than tractor system, and even with that I'd be damn careful. You can be hard on pump, you will ocasionally hear it squeal. Basically it will talk to you.

The easiest way to tell what pump it has is to run the tractor on a flow-rater. You"ll need to take the tractor to a farm equipment shop to have this done, but it only takes about five minutes to do and you"ll know exactly what kind of flow and pressure your system has. As for your loader, do you want more speed or more lifting force? Increasing the flow will give you more speed, but the weight you can lift is limited by the amount of pressure your system develops. This is controlled by a relief valve. Some of the older tractors have a relief valve that can be shimmed up for more pressure, but I"m not sure if the 504 had that style.
