My C Idols like a dream but with the least of accelleration it spits and sputters bad. I have had the carb rebuilt by a well known mechanic. Could it be in the magneto? Can I change that out to a distributor?

If it had a distributor, I'd say to put in a new set of points. I have been fooled into thinking there was a carb problem more than once....

Is there some black smoke when it sputters? Did this problem just develop right after you had the carb rebuilt? If so, the Zenith carbs on the A, Super A, C and Super C are notorious for running rich when the float levels are set to factory specs. If the factory setting for yours was 1 + 5/32", try setting it at 1 + 8/32". That will lower the fuel level in the float bowl just a hair - usually cures the problem. mike

Make sure the timing is right. They'll idle if the timing is off, but give you a fit under power. Once that's OK, check the spark by pulling the boot ends off of the wires at the plug and run her up until she sputter's alittle, then pull the wires off of the plugs one at a time. Hold the wire close to the plug and you should have a nice strong blue spark at each of the plugs. (don't touch tractor while doing this). If you have weak or no fire at any of the plugs, there's the problem. If you got fire, then it must be fuel or compression related. Even the best mechanic can make a mistake. If she blows alittle black smoke when she sputters, it's too rich...if not, she's probably too lean. The carbs on the C's are easy to adjust. Sorry so long...hope is some help...Happy New Year!

Try to isolate the trouble to either spark or fuel by pulling one plug wire at a time & seeing if it affects the running quality of the engine. If pulling wires does make a difference, take a look at the points & distributor cap / rotor area.

You may have dirt or rust in the tank or the gas line. Loosen the gas line at the carburetor and look for a good stream of gas. Hold a container beneath the carb and catch any gas. Pull a plug wire off when at an idle and see what the firing looks like. Should have a blue spark. If you have good spark and a good stream of gas at the carb your float may not be set high enough. If have weak spark spark your mag coil may be weak.
That can be replaced without pulling the mag. Hal

I keep the magneto on it. Maybe you should service the magneto once. The magneto is not the problem. Your plug wires could be shot or spark plugs. Also adjust the carb when the tractor is running doing the spit and sputter and see if that makes a difference.
