Howdy, Boys:

If a fellow wants a GM 3-wire alternator and he goes to Auto Zone, or where ever, to get one, what does he ask for as far as application? I mean, if I walked into a parts store around here and said, "Give me a GM 3-wire alternator.", the punk kid behind the counter with the rock music headset plugged into his ears would just stare off into space like I was an ancient alien (which to him, I am, I suppose). mike

Thanks, but no; I am convinced that a 3-wire is the way to go - at least for a tractor, based upon what the fellows on this forum have said. mike

A 73 IH pickup with no AC or anything else came out with a 37 amp alternator standard. This is what we use on all our conversions & have never had any trouble. Never have to worry about overloading the wiring or any other problems.

Same alternator as the Chevs and you probably pay more just by asking for an alternato for the IH instead of the Chev

Just to add to waht Bob says. If you have an O'reillys auto parts store close get one from them for as he said a 1975-1985 Chev pickup. But the nice thing with O'reillys is if you pay about $5-10 more you can get one with a life time warrenty so if it ever stops working you can just take it back and get a new one for free.

A SAFE range of years to ask for is a 1975 to 1985 Chevy pickup.

WITH AC will probably get you a 65 or 70 Amp unit.

WITHOUT AC will probably get you a 45 to 55 AMP unit.

The lower Amp units are OK for your conversion, UNLESS you will have really high electrical loads.

The lower Amperage is still WAY over what a generator would put out, yet doesn't put such a high charging rate at startup though the (perhaps) old wiring and ammeter. YOUR choice!
