I gor a 1990 GMC 3500 1ton. I was asking some older guys about swaping out the greeper+ 3 speed trainsmisson with one that has a over drive. They told me to look for a over drive that bolts on the back of the tranimissom. Said they where made by baker. Any body have any info on these?Baker or any other brand. Thanks Bill

For the cost of an overdrive, you could probably swap in a boneyard NVG (New Venture Gear) "4500" 5-speed transmission. Should be a bolt-in deal, except for the driveshaft.

You might also want to look into a Gear Vendors overdrive, I tried to put a link to their site with this message.

They're pretty popular and the new ones are computer-controlled.

However, they're EX$PENSIVE...you'd be money-ahead to swap in a regular manual overdrive transmission.

I have very often wished for an OD gear too, although I have an 88 Chevy 1-ton with the Turbo 400 automatic. (3 speeds). Seems like the fuel consumption would get reasonable and I could drive over 65 mph without feeling like I'm killing the engine...

I looked into doing the same thing a few years ago. At that time the overdrive units were mostly being marketed to the RV aftermarket industry. The price turned me off real quick.

Yep,

That's the outfit. Watched my old boss put one in a '76 tonner.

$800 back in the eighties and that didn't include the irons/labor to mount it. As I recall, he had to have the driveshaft shorteded as well.

It worked, but sure didn't impress me all that much. Kind of a "clunky" setup.

Yeah,

Doug Nash used to manufacture those units too. Kind of a reversed 2-speed thing.

Think the best option would be to just trade trucks.

i have seen those in rv and off road magizines, i always wanted one for my hay truck [ a 83 c30 with a 12 foot flatbed/ dump] but never got one that add on unit also will allow you to use the overdrive in all the gears, instead of just high hole. the the tranny he's talking about has a large gap between 3rd and 4th and makes it alomost inpossible to keep the engine in the tourque band with a heavy load
