Super H Clutch Question

Howdy, boys:

You know how you can replace a clutch on an H without having to split the tractor? Well, can you do a SUPER H (Stage II) clutch job the same way - meaning without having to split the tractor?

Also, what about replacing the seals on the front of a Super H stage II transmission? Can that be done from underneath without splitting the tractor, as can be done on an H?

As always, I appreciate you all for your interest and helpfulness.

mike

Yes, you can. The worst part of the whole ordeal is getting the transmission input shaft out. It"s a tight slip past the input yoke on the transmission, and will only come out after the pressure plate has been unbolted from the flywheel.

Stage 2 SH should only have a input shaft seal on front of transmission and it can be changed. I have never tryed to take a SH clutch out bottom so can't answer that. I guess it depends where and what you have to work on tractor with. I would rather split a H than work from under and can have one split in close to same time as it takes to get everything out from under. On a Stage 2 SH though you have the hydraulic lines to deal with. I would split anyway but just my opinion and not saying its the best way.

I have replaced the clutch on both an H and an M without splitting the tractors. The common belief is that due to the larger diameter on the supers, the clutch cannot be changed without splitting, but I have a neighbor who owns a couple of super Ms, that were and still are an integral part of his farming operation. He always did his own mechanic work, and has told me that the clutches can be changed on a super M without splitting. I personally do not have any experience with the supers, but I think I would sure give it a try if I did. For sure you can change out the seals.

I'm sure Houdini tricks are possible, but I recall a cramped and very dirty space on the 49 H I once had (this did not have the liftall hyd pump).

My thinking is you'll do much better quality work that will last if you split the tractor and can work on the parts "out in the open". Working in a cramped space sometimes results in substandard work just because you can't reach it!

I split and reassembled my tractor with nothing more than an engine hoist and some wooden frames I built up of scrap sheet-steel pallet timbers (heavy 3x5 hardwood timbers), triangulated with 3/4" plywood, and assembled with gorilla glue and deck screws. It took awhile, but were I going to tinker with such an integral piece as the clutch, I'd not want to go back anytime soon and redo it...

My .02. Happy New Year!

You cannot remove the flywheel from the bottom and to do a proper clutch job you have to have the flywheel ground so the new disk mates to the flywheel for long life.

The flywheel does not always need to be resurfaced. Usually resurfacing is required only when the clutch has been abused.
