I was offered a Green tractor today...and I am thinking I "might" buy it. It has a hole in the block the size of your fist. Is there technology and people out there that fix big holes?? A rod came through the side. The water jacket is not involved

Randy

You did not go far enough on the data page. Go to the 40 page and then go to the bottom of the page where the S/Ns are. You will find the 40S, 40T and the 40 U Tractors. the 40S has wide front end, 40T has trycycle wheels etc.

I don't know very much about these tractors either. It says on the data plate 40 S. I believe the S stands for "Standard." It definitely is not in the crawler family.

There is a shop in Nevada Iowa that repairs them.

That is there business to repair cracked and broken heads and blocks.

They can fix any hole any where on the block within reason.

I'm sure with a good welder at the task it can be done. As long as its not a stressful part of the block, it might be possible. For the cost to repair it, you might find a replacement block. You'd more then likely have to disassmble the engine to have it patched properly. Grinding the edges of the hole smooth to facilitate a patch will leave the insides full of metal. The hardest part in my opinion would be finding a piece of cast to fit. They can do wonders to blend in the weld to make it look almost nonexistent. I would ask around locally at machine shops or fabrication places, they might be able to help or direct you towards someone that can.
I think the cost to have it welded might be comparable to finding another block. Explore your options before getting in too deep with one venture. I'd have the block checked for other cracks before I bothered trying to get it patched

Dad bought a used 4020 in 1970. About a year later it threw a rod, number 6, right behind the starter, fist sized hole. Got it patched with a cover made of heavy aluminum sheet. Holes drilled and tapped, etc. to bolt it fast.Put one new sleeve, piston and rod in. My brother still uses the tractor as one of his main horses.

Tom, I have seen people repair holes with a flat piece of steel and JB Weld. You drill a hole about every 1 1/4in and bolt through the block, nuts on the inside. I always wanted to try self-drilling screws.(Fastenal)
