I have a "54 Super C w/ a Carter carb. The carb has been rebuilt however gas pours out of the carb whenever I turn on the gas. I have made sure the upper and lower halves are not warped. Has anyone had similar troubles? Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, I have the same problem on my C. I know of others with this same problem. They say the fix is to buy a Zenith carb. I haven't done this yet but I think it is in my future. I have had my Carter apart several times and rebuilt it and it still leaks. Good luck. Dave.

Is the float hanging up on the side of the float bowl?

Who rebuilt the carb? There are plenty of opportunities for an inexperienced person to get it wrong. Your only option is to take it apart and have a look. When you put it back together, follow the directions to the letter, and make sure everything is squeaky clean.

I rebuilt the carburetor myself. Everything seems to be clean as 50 year old stuff can be. I know the needle seats because it will stick in the seat, I guess its not seating well enough when the gas is turned on.

The float does not cause the needle to be properly seated, either because it is stuck against the side of the bowl, or because you need a new needle and seat. Go to www.caseih.com and look at the diagram for a Carter carb. The parts are #33 -- 88977 R91--this is for a C, I doubt if the Super C is any different, the parts listing may be slightly different.

The needle and seat are brand new. If the float wasn't seating the needle when the bowl was full, wouldn't the gasket stop the fuel from flowing out of the bowl and into the air tube?

No,if the needle leaks gas is going to run till it fills the air filter and can flow up through the valves and past the piston rings and into the oil pan.
