Hi guys.I have recently purchased a farmall 400 gas and a 450 diesel from an estate. Both tractors had been sitting for several years. Both were completly dry on hydraulic oil.Isoon had them both running, but cannot get hydraulics on either tractor to work.My question is could pumps need priming. If not got any ideas what to do next. Thanks for any help.

Under hood in front of hydraulic valves there's a breather pipe for reservior, It has a cap with a filter element under cap. Remove cap and put some air pressure in breather pipe when tractor is running and it will forse fluid up from reservior into pump line. Don't over do pressure, does'nt take mutch. Actualy if suction and discharge lines have not ben removed or leaking enough oil stays in lines to keep pump from going dry when tractor is not running. That may not be true if tractors were run with reserviors dry long enough though.

If the hydraulic reservoirs were completely dry, that's not good news. They probably went dry from neglect, not some misguided preventative maintenance.

The gear can't be stripped, or the tractors would not run, since the distributor is driven by the hydraulic pump.

On the right side of the steering pedestal is a little round cover with 4 bolts. That's the filter screen. It probably needs cleaning, and is occasionally the reason why hydraulics don't work.

I believe there is a small plug in the top of the pump for priming, but if the pump is any good, it should prime itself if the reservoir is full.

The 450D's pump will be a problem, as it is special. It turns backwards, and they don't make replacement pumps. Neither pump can be rebuilt.

Thanks for the correction NAT. It totally slipped my mind that the tach and distributor are driven by the pump.

Hopefully u added the hydraulic fluid before u ran it. running the system dry is murder on the pumps. I doubt the pumps need primed, as the pump is below the resevoirs and any air would be quickly replaced with fluid. Maybe try to loosen the output of the pump and see if oil comes out. If it doesnt, maybe the pump gear is stripped or the fluid filter is clogged something bad. I'm not sure on the specifics of the 2 tractors you have, but these ideas should give you a starting point. Any things you have tried would be helpful.
