Hi , Looking towards the future I'm trying to find out which trailer type plow to buy for the M . I obviously want one with easy to get parts . How many bottoms for the M just for fun and frolic at plow days ? I don't need to pull the max but maybe more than just one bottom ? So what's the opinions on plows ? BTW - My furrow tire is a 15.5x38 the other one is 12.4x38 . Thanks ...Randy

The M was rated as a 3 plow tractor, but if you have hard ground like I do, then you are better off with a 2-16. I did some plowing this fall with my IHC 3-14 and even with the plow set as shallow as it would go, 2nd gear was as fast as I could go. Had a couple of REALLY hard spots that I barely got through in 2nd. I tried plowing some alfalfa in an attempt to scour the plow, but the ol' M would'nt do it.

Hi , The 2-14 , 2-16 or 3-12 are probably the ones I'll look for in that order . I guess the 60 or 70 is the particular model I'm going to look for if parts are still readily available and don't cost big money . I have a lot of fixing on the M before I can even hitch a plow up to it but I should have that done by spring . It just needs some new bearings and seals in the front of the tranny . Or a new rear section if the inards are beyond repair . Thanks! Have a good New year ! ...Randy

Randy if you could find a number 60 or 70 two 16's you would be the happiest. You can still buy new steel for them which is really the most important part next to hitching.I always pull 3 16's with my super M but in heavy ground its slow going and turning the manifold and muffler red.

Running with those 2 size tires on your tractor will over work the rear end if the diameter of them isn't the same and will also make it pull to one side when going in a stright line. As far as plow any good 2 bottom plow would be good in almost all soils. I have 3 pull type plows for sale right noe. @ of them are Oliver and one is JD all 3 are in pretty good shape and parts aren't hard to find for them either

Hi Old , Read my reply to Nat about my tires . I goofed on the sizes . Unless you can deliver for free ;-) those plows are out of my reach . But anyway I want to pull a IH behind the Farmall . They might not be the best but they certainly aren't the worst either . If I can't find a good one a Oliver will work too . Everyone around here has deere plows that I've noticed and I could probably pick one up but I'd rather not . I'm just not sure of size . It'll be used for plowing meets mostly and those will be in many different types of soil . I want to work the tractor just not to death . Thanks ! Have a great New year ! ...Randy

I pull a 2 bottom 14 behind my 1935 JD-B and it does well and its a lot smaller then your M is by far. I would say find your self a 2-16 and that M if in good shape will just play with it in just about all soil conditions

Doesn't your tractor run around in circles all the time, with one tire being so much bigger than the other?

Money has a lot to do with it, but you really should have the same size tire on both sides. The 15.5x38s are the same diameter as a 14.9x38, just wider. 12.4x38 is an H tire.

Hi Nat , I goofed , I don't know what I was thinking of but the smaller tire is a 13.6x38 I just went out and looked . I measured the radius and it's the same for both tires due to the 15.5 being mostly worn out and the 13.6 being closer to 75% good . That's just the way it's been since I bought the tractor . I haven't noticed any handling problems and you are right it's a money thing . I'm hoping to find a deal on a tire at a farm auction this year . I'd like to end up with two 15.5's but the 13.6 is in much better condition reguardless of the weather checks . But what's your opinion on plows ? ...Randy

Hey , Thanks for the offer but unless you have a trip planned through sunny north east Iowa I'll have to pass . One will show up around here I just haven't been looking because it's not up there on the priority list . I haven't even talked to the tractor jockey's that I know yet because they always have something available . Have a good New year! ...Randy

I pull a 3 bottom number 8 little genius plow behind my 1950 M and it does a real job.But a 2bottom 14 or 16 will work nicely.

Hi Berry , Someone mentioned on a earlier post that a little genius can be pretty frustrating with the points coming loose . Have you run into this problem ? There's a 2 bottom little genius #8 on ebay right now for a couple more hours . I can't say if it's complete or not since I don't know what to look for but it doesn't look worn out . It's to far from me though . Thanks ! Have a good New year ! ...Randy

we used 3-12's on the m's one was an i-h little genius and the other was a 3-12 deere trailer. when we got the super m, we used to pull a 3-14 i-h trailer that had hydraulic lift. used a dual on the landside tire, inners were loaded with chloride + one pancake weight on each wheel. depends on your soil type, but i wouldnt go any bigger than a 3-14. there are quite a few of the smaller plows around and can be had for a bargain price.

Hi glennster , I don't want to put duals on since this is for fun only so a 2-14 or 2-12 should work out OK . If I have to get weights that's OK but this is primarily my hay rake tractor . And when I get my IH endgate seeder finished it'll do that too . It has pulled the baler and dropped on the ground but I prefer my Oliver 1755 for baling . There's a good oldtime auction nearby every spring and sometimes there's even usable plows there . Thanks for the info ! Have a good New year! ...Randy

Randy,

Where and when is that old time auction in your area? I would like to go to that.

I have a 2-16" #8 that I pull with my H; don't have heavy soils so I can plow in both 2nd and 3rd real well.

You should have both tires the same. Usually the land tire will slip more than the furrow tire.

Hi CNKS, I agree with you but all things in due time . I don't use the tractor much , it's mostly just a rake tractor and a backup for the big tractor for baling . It was this way when I bought it and I've just never needed to change it yet . I misstated the size , it's a 13.6 with good tread and basicly it looks to be the same rolling radius as the 15.5 that's worn out . I found out about that tire slippage last spring with the big tractor on my first plow day ever . Tried pulling it to deep through the mud and didn't have the tractor's draft control set up right to plow so I almost got stuck . I got it out of the ground and made it through OK . We avoided that spot the rest of the day . I'd post a picture but it's of me on the Oliver with a Oliver plow . Not the right forum . Have a good New year ! ...Randy
