I called a dealer last week about a 686 he had listed in the farm paper. It is a 1980 model. He said he just put a new t.a. and clutch in it. The tires look about 75% tread left on them. The tractor has 5000 hours on it. it was inspected from grill to drawbar. nothing done to the motor. The paint shines like almost new. He said it wasn't repainted. I've just seen a picture of it so can't tell for sure. He is asking $10,900 for it. I was thinking in the $8500 range. He sounded pretty firm on his price. What do you guys think? Should I bite the bullet and pay that much or wait for him to come down or keep looking for a different one. Of course I would have to go and look at it and test drive before buying. Any and all opinions apprecaited

I watched a 686 with 312 American engine, new paint, new 18.4x38 Firestone tires bring $11500 here in west central Iowa this fall on a farm sale. Sorry can't remember the hrs.

Tractor values sure vary, here in central NY a 686 goes for 6500 to 8500, a nice size tractor but the TA doesn't hold back in low. Unhandy on a hill farm or rolling hayfield. But you wont find shiny paint here due to acid rain. Some dealers like to bring tractors in from Ohio, they look sharp but the hour meter is on the second time around. You can check the drawbar for wear, but its cheap and easy to replace a worn drawbar. Its $2400 more than you planned on spending. If someone else snags it out from under you before you can look it over good, let them have it. You said any and all opinions, so there's mine. But I'm a cheapskate anyhow.

Mark: I'm with Allan, you may have missed the boat. One thing in your favor, it's Christmas, they have probably been closed since Fri., and not a lot of folks tractor shopping this season anyhow.

While 686 may be 26 years old, it's still a modern day tractor, less electronic bells and whistles, and that adds dollars to it's value.

An '80 model 686 diesel with 5,000 actual hours, new TA and clutch?

It's probably gone by now. If it isn't, you'd better be for buying it, 'cause it isn't gonna last long.

Your dealer is correct on his pricing. This one sold in Illinois over a year ago for $10K and it had the American diesel.

I was at a farm sale here in ND a few weeks ago and a pretty nce 656 gas gear drive brought in the $8500 range so he's probably not that far out of line. The TA and clutch alone are worth the $2000 difference(parts and labor). GOOD LUCK! You know they just don't make old tractors anymore and a new on in that range will be 45,000 plus.
