I've Got a 1952 Super M that was converted to 12 volts about 20 years ago. I just rewired it and it ran find until I had trouble turining it off. I've had the wiring checked and it look's good but it seems to have trouble turining it off. what could be the problem?

I Checked the Diode this morning along with the wiring diogarams you guys sent to me. I had wired the tractor correcty and put the diode in the correct line with the band toward the Alt. The Diode did blow do to High Voltage. It then came back to me that while rewiring the Farmall I didn't have the exact diode to replace the old one so I used the closest one I could find in my Electronics Lab. I have the diode # written down and tomarrow i should have it fixed.

Yes It does have an Alternator and a diode going to the coil, I think the diode blew, I'll check that first think tomarrow morning, thanks for all the help.

I use 1N5408 diodes. Their ratings are OVERKILL for this application, but I have never seen one fail. (So far!) Typically, the staff at Radio Shaft give folks a dumbfounded stare when they ask for that part #, but they ARE readily available at industrial electronics places, and on the 'net.

Is your's set up something like this?

Diode going to the coil???? The diode should be hooked to the #1 terminal on the alternator with the line on the diode on/in the alternator side of the wire. I alway put the diode close to the alternator, don't ask me why but thats where I put them, guess maybe its so people can see that its there.

I will cast my vote same as the gents below, since it happened after a rewiring sounds like the ignition switch is bad or more likely wired wrong,,,,, ,, or in the event it has a GM 10 SI 3 Wire alternator, perhaps you miswired a diode or an in line series resistor in its excitation circuit, cuz without one or the other and if its wired like many 3 wire alternators the coil is being backfed voltage from the alternators lil side 1R terminal excitation circuit, so she runs even with the ignition switched off. If so add a series 10 ohm current limiting safety resistor right before where it wires to the lil terminal 1R on the alternator and that should let it die when you turn off the ignition switch. If its NOT an alternator problem, get a test lamp n attach it to the IGN output terminal on the ignition switch (that wires to the coil) n see if goes on n off with the ignition switch as it should.

Am I missing somthing?? I can"t find anything to indicate this tractor has an alternator.

His problem sounds like shutting down rather then charging or starting. Maybe I"am not reading it right.

Its a sort of guess thing since he said it was converted to 12 volts. And 90% of the time that means it has an alternator in place of a genny. And he says it will not turn off which again leads at least me to believe it has an alterntor, but he didn't really say/give enough info to be sure, so we guess and ope we read his mind the right way LOL

A diode needs to be put inline with the wire feeding the alternator. (the little one, not the heavy wire) The diode must be able to handle 5 amps or so to be reliable. I believe the band (nonconducting end) of the diode needs to be toward the alternator. This prevents alternator voltage from feeding the ignition coil through the connection at the switch. JimN

Sounds like you either need to put a 194 light bulb or a diode in the wire going from the excite side/terminal of the alterntor to the switch. What happens is the alternator back feeds the coil and yep no engine shut off because of it. If your useing an dleco alternator you put that lite or diode in the wire going to the #1 terminal on the little plug on it

You need to check your ignition switch to see if you have voltage at your coil when the switch is in the off position. For some unknown reason you are feeding battery voltage to your ignition.

I think there's been a problem with alternators back feeding voltage to the ignition. Bob M or John T probably have seen this problem and have a fix. Hal

1952 Super M. I don't know...is this tractor equipped with a Magneto or coil?


"I think"

If magneto, then there is a break in the ground wire between the switch and magneto or the switch itself has failed.

If a coil, then, I would think you have a bad switch in the cirucit that is not breaking the flow to the coil.
