See alot of tractors listed with TA problems. Do they get unusable or do you just lose some ratios??

TAs are the shining point of any Farmall/IH SMTA on up. They make speed and torque selection painless and are worth the effort to fix. Our 350U has the same (working) TA in as it had when new. It has been through one in chassis, and one full rebuild with a main clutch, with no service on the TA. If used rapidly between Low and High, and High and Low, and kept in adjustment By the book (twice a year for ten minutes) they work for a long long long time. JimN

The TA on my 544 was out when I bought it. The guy that I bought it from used the tractor for field mowing and didn't even know what the TA was. The TA was so out of adjustment that it didn't work. After I adjusted the TA, it works great.

I read from lots of posts here that T/A s last a long time if used right. There must be a lot tht aren't as you see quite a few posts where TA is bad, mostly on low side. I think part of it is keeping it adjsted. It is a serious enough problem that most tractor adds you see for the earlier ta equiped tractors say " TA good" or "TA bad". When I first bought my SMTA the TA was out on the low side. I used it that way for about a year before I had to go into the PTO seasonal disconnect so had it split once. I debated on fixing it then and decided I would. I am glad I did as It is a really useful option especially on tillage or on PTO equipment. Mine was not that expensive to fix, bought a rebuild ramp and roller setup, carrier it ran on was ok and ta clutch was good, a few seals and gaskets and it was done, I did the work on it though. You can also get a TA eliminator setup but it cost about as much as repairing the TA.

Most of the time you just louse the low side and the torq can be adjusted to run in direct and most of the time they will run like this for a long time until someting elese in the torq wares out.
