taking SC apart - questions

I'm in the process of rebuilding the motor on my '53 Super C. I have questions:

1) the manual says that the main bearing caps are marked for location. Where are they marked ? I have looked them over and cannot see a stamp or punch mark like the rods. FYI The crank is ground 0.010" undersize (rods and mains). That may be related to why the previous owner tried to add a dipstick.

2) The oil pressure gauge does not have wrench flats (that I can see). How do you get it out without resorting to water pump pliers ?

3) Is the rocker arm ratio 1.3:1 ? The IH manuals from binder books don't seem to cover the SC. A, AV, B, BN manual gives valve lift at 0.261". Camshaft lift for the later motors (F140, F240, etc.) looks to be 0.240". I&T is silent on the matter.

Thanks

Greg

I just removed the crankshaft from my "51 SC a few days ago. The main bearing caps have their numbers stamped on the end facing the camshaft. A matching number is stamped on the bottom face of the crankcase that the oil pan is bolted to. You may have to scrape the face to remove any old gasket material that may be stuck to it.
Can"t help you with the valve lift measurements.
Sid.

The marks might not be obvious, mark them with a punch, or letter stamp, or majic marker. 1 towards front. The removal of gauges like that can be done with this "available" tool. Take a piece of 1/2"X1/8" mild steel about 6" long and curve the end of it to match the gauge OD (in the flat direction, not edge). Take a leather or nylon web strap and put it around the gauge circumference and clamp a vice grip pliers onto the strap so it sticks out sideways, not out from the front. Put the metal strip under the head of the vice grip to buffer the contact point and turn left on the pliers. The force will be distributed well and it should unscrew. I do not know about the cam lift. JimN
