Couple guys offered to help me give the 966 Diesel a makeover. It is a very straight tractor with all the leaks fixed and no drips on the floor so I'm gonna give her some lovin. I've always used 2150 I. H. paint and primer and then clear coated but maybe I should look at another 1 step process paint this time. What are you guys having good results with and could you give me some numbers of other brands that match the color and depth of the 2150? Thanks Migraine

get gloss red from your local casih dealer and add hardner, i painted my 1466 that way, but we did bake the paint on, and it still shines after 4 years, of working in the fields

I'm gonna do my MTAD with 2150 between xmas and new years. Its the only way you will get a good color red. Alot of guys are talking about a urethane enamel as opposed to the acrylic 2150. I don't disagree that its better paint, but tell the guys at NAPA you want IH red, they will look at you stupid, and say its a tractor, red is red. Then you'll end up with Farmall that has a hint of Allis Chalmers to it. 2150 has always been, and will always be the closest to the correct shade. Plus the urethanes are in the neighborhood of 120 a gallon! Ouch

Wait a minute; let's talk this over.

My understanding is that if you were to paint it green, it would up the value to three times it's actual worth.

'Course, come to think of it, that would also give you a little bit of an "attitude" so guess we don't want that. :>)

Hadn't thought of that, but if he did paint it green, and then let it sit and fade out for a few years, it would probably be worth about $79,000

You might have opened up a can of worms with that question. Opinions are like noses, every body has one. That being said, my opinion is that if it was good enough to use when the tractor was new, it's good enough for me to use when I freshen one up. For the money, you just can't beat the 2150, but I'm not real sure the 2150 is the correct color for a 966? Seems like they are a bit darker shade?

2150 appeared in 1961 and was used until sometime close to the CIH merger I believe, I don't know the year, I don't think it was before 1980, could be wrong. Due to the change in paint manufacturers and formulation, etc, that does not mean that you can still duplicate the original color. The current 2150 has too much orange in it, IMO. The original colors are long gone.

Don't think so. The dark ones started at the 986s, didn't they?

Thanks guys, I believe after thinking it over I'll just stick with the 2150 and skip the clear coat but just wet sand before the final shot and then polish it up after it cures for 3 months or so. Amazing Allan how much my ol girl will look like yours with all the same features and fenders. The idea of green just won't fly here as I can hardly stand it when my 7 year old grandson wears his grreeeennnn hat over here just to get me going. He has just that little smirk on his face cause he knows I notice, I'll just wash his face tomorrow as we are taking all the kids and grandkids up in the hills to do some sledding and tubing. I can feel the pain coming already. Not as agile as I once was but I won't let them run me over either. Well thanks for the replies and I'll try to post some before and after pictures if I can figure that out. Have a great Holiday Season. Migraine
